About the role

Chronosphere

Chronosphere is the provider of the only observability platform that puts engineering organizations back in control by taming rampant data growth and cloud-native complexity, delivering increased business confidence. Teams at startups to well-known global brands in the Fortune 500 around the world trust Chronosphere to help them operate scalable, highly available and resilient applications.

Chronosphere is looking for trailblazers who are experts in their space and are passionate about creating meaningful solutions for engineers and digital businesses.

Chronosphere is a series C startup with more than $250M in funding and a $1B+ valuation. We’re a remote-first company, backed by Greylock, Lux Capital, General Atlantic, Addition and Founders Fund.

About the role

We’re looking for Senior (or higher) Product Designers to help shape the IA, UX, and UI of the Chronosphere application. Our users (of varying skills and experience levels) require tools that make it possible to understand, interact with, and manage ridiculously large data systems across large enterprises - your job is to create experiences that make all that possible, efficient, and even enjoyable. In this role you’ll get to employ the full breadth of your skills and experience - user research, information architecture, wireframes, pixels, testing, and validation.

Some technical depth will be helpful to this role. Chronosphere is a deeply technical enterprise product that serves a deeply technical audience, with whom you’ll need to communicate somewhat intelligently. You don’t have to know how to do the job of our customers, but you need to be able to wrap your head around the complexities of their infrastructure and the data it emits to Chronosphere.

You will

  • Manage design projects from start to finish, working with the PM to understand what users need to accomplish and then researching, designing, and validating the best way for them to do that.
  • Work with our PMs, engineers, and Head of Product Design to understand how our existing customers use Chronosphere and their expectations for making it better.
  • Generate detailed specs of final designs that allow devs to build accurately (ie great written communication is pretty important)
  • Function as a bridge across disciplines, such as Design, Product, Engineering, and Marketing
  • Work with UI Engineers to QA and deliver a final polished product
  • Help with the creation and editing of documentation, to make sure it’s helpful and understandable to end users
  • Collaborate with the Head of Product Design to specify and cultivate interface guidelines and design patterns
  • Perform and share ongoing user research to help build a better understanding of our target personas and how users are interacting with our product.

What you will achieve

In your first 30 days, you will review the Chronosphere product, become familiar with our users and personas, and understand the conceptual model underlying the current user experience.  You’ll own a smaller project and be taking part in ongoing user interviews.

After 3 months, you’ll be owning (in constant collaboration with your design colleague) the design for a product lane and helping to perform the corresponding user validation.

After 6 months, you’ll be strategizing future product lane conceptual models and UX, as well as using your solid grasp of the underlying Chronosphere and M3 technology to make its implications clear for users throughout the application.

You have

  • A proven ability to balance ideal user experiences with the realities of time and deliverables.
  • Experience designing enterprise software (B2B) and views of large datasets
  • The brain of an engineer (or at least the ability to play one on TV) with the heart of a UX practitioner
  • The ability to prioritize the information architecture and user flows end of the UX spectrum over the pixel-perfect end (though you love that side, too).
  • An expert understanding of user-centered design methods and best practices
  • An ability to communicate your ideas to a wide variety of stakeholders

The team

Reporting to Sterling Koch, Head of Product Design

Sterling has spent his tech career oscillating between design and development, and over the years has happily honed in on Product Design and Strategy for technical enterprise startups.  His attraction to Chronosphere was immediate since it involved solving usability problems in a space that is notoriously difficult to reason about while getting to work with the people who helped define that space in th
