About the role

Under the direction of the Sergeant, Department of Public Safety (DPS), the Public Safety Assistant II (PSA II), provides essential support to DPS. This role requires comprehensive knowledge of the organization with skill in working in the security field and following all DPS policies and procedures. The PSA II is responsible for performing a broad range of duties while maintaining professionalism and confidentiality.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Safeguards Tribal citizens, assets, guests, team members, facilities, and operations by watching for unauthorized entry, suspicious activity, or crimes. It includes interacting with visitors to ensure safety, maintaining high vigilance, and accurately reporting incidents. Patrols and monitors assigned areas, including buildings, offices, and areas, either on foot or in a vehicle, to identify any suspected violations of policies, procedures, or laws.
2. Works proactively with DPS Sergeants, providing essential support. Assists in training and developing PSAs to ensure optimal efficiency and smooth operations.
3. Assists in carrying out investigations by examining and validating information through diverse investigative methods and interviewing pertinent individuals. Compiles written reports following departmental guidelines and presents oral reports as needed.
4. Monitors designated areas, addresses service calls, observes and assesses situations, collects essential information, and drafts incident reports for cases that don’t need additional follow-up.
5. Maintains care and control of authorized equipment, issued uniforms, and departmental equipment and areas.  
6. Serves as a PSA liaison, concentrating on PSA operations to ensure peak performance under the guidance of the DPS Sergeants.
7. Determines the need to initiate an investigation based on observations, and identifies, gathers, handles, and safeguards physical evidence as required, all in accordance with relevant laws, policies, and procedures.
8. Responds to emergencies and other incidents, taking immediate action to control the scene, administer first aid, offer necessary assistance, and make any required notifications.
9. Provides information and educates on relevant policies, procedures, and ordinances. Maintains positive relationships with internal guests, vendors, and team members. Employs a range of high-quality communication skills and specialized techniques to interact with community groups and guests from all backgrounds, both formally and informally.
10. Performs other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department.

SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT OPPORTUNITIES

These positions are  available to current PSAIIs who have successfully completed their Field Training Program, are in good standing, and have been in their position for minimum of six (6) months. Special assignments require current Public Safety employees to go through a testing and selection process. Once selected, the Assistant will receive specialized training for their assignment.

PSA IIs selected for this assignment will be responsible for training new Public Safety Assistants (PSA) during their on-the-job training program.  The PSA II completes required reports and documents their trainees training progress to the designated shift supervisor. They will train Public Safety Assistants on their designated shift assignment and may be asked to teach periodically at the Training Center and or in Shift Briefings. The PSA II reviews trainee proficiency and assesses work performance through observation and reporting.

EDUCATIONAL, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

•    High School diploma or General Education Development (GED) is required. 
•    Minimum two (2) years of security experience is required. 
•    Minimum one (1) year of security supervisory experience is preferred. 
•    Must be at least 21 years of age.  

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA)

•    Must possess outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.  
•    Advanced critical thinking and investigative skills.

•    Must possess intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook).  
•    Working knowledge of security procedures, relevant State, Federal, and Tribal laws, regulations, and ordinances; proficiency in interviewing and interrogation techniques; and an understanding of laws related to search and seizure.
