About the role

Job Summary

Vertiv is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Intern to support the IT Solutions engineering team in the design, development, and validation of rack- and row-based infrastructure products supporting high-density compute and AI-driven data center applications.

In this role, you will gain hands-on experience with CAD modeling, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), engineering drawings, and tolerance analysis while supporting senior engineers through the new product development lifecycle. You will work in a fast-paced, growing business unit building next-generation data center infrastructure.

You will work cross-functionally with global engineering, product management, and manufacturing teams, playing a key role in driving innovation, interoperability, and system-level performance in a fast-paced New Product Development (NPD) environment.

Why This Role is Exciting

· Direct exposure to next-generation data center and AI infrastructure solutions

· Hands-on experience in a lab environment — building, testing, and validating real hardware

· Work alongside experienced engineers across electrical, mechanical, thermal, and controls disciplines

· Meaningful project ownership — not just observation

· Opportunity to learn mechanical design standards, compliance, and system-level thinking at Vertiv

Key Responsibilities

1.Design Support & CAD

· Create and update 3D models and 2D drawings using CAD tools (Creo, SolidWorks, or equivalent)

· Assist with mechanical design reviews and provide feedback on component and system designs

· Support Bill of Material (BOM) creation and maintenance

· Develop manufacturing-ready documentation with proper GD&T callouts

2.Analysis & Validation

· Perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for structural and thermal validation of components and assemblies

· Conduct tolerance analysis and stack-up studies to ensure fit and function across system interfaces

· Support prototype builds and validation testing in the engineering lab

· Document analysis results and test findings with clear, thorough reporting

3.Cross-Functional Collaboration

· Work alongside senior mechanical, electrical, and thermal engineers on integrated system designs

· Participate in cross-functional design reviews and team meetings

· Support manufacturing and production teams during factory integration activities

· Collaborate with sourcing and supplier teams on component specifications

4.Learning & Development

· Gain exposure to industry compliance standards and design-for-manufacturing principles

· Learn system-level mechanical architecture for rack- and row-based infrastructure

· Develop problem-solving skills through real-world engineering challenges

· Present project results and findings at internship showcase events

Qualifications

Required

· Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or related field

· Completed at least sophomore year of coursework

· Foundational understanding of statics, dynamics, materials, and thermodynamics

· Experience with 3D CAD software (Creo, SolidWorks, or equivalent)

· Strong problem-solving and analytical skills

· Ability to work hands-on in a lab environment

· Effective communication skills — written and verbal

· Self-motivated with the ability to take initiative and ask questions

Preferred

· Coursework or project experience in FEA, GD&T, or tolerance analysis

· Familiarity with sheet metal design and manufacturing processes

· Exposure to thermal management or structural design

· Experience with simulation tools (ANSYS, Creo Simulate, or similar)

· Previous co-op, internship, or project experience in a hardware engineering environment

What We’re Looking For

· A curious, hands-on learner eager to work in a multidisciplinary engineering environment

· Someone who takes ownership of their work and delivers results

· A team player who communicates clearly and collaborates well with experienced engineers

· A self-starter who isn't afraid to ask questions and dig into complex problems
