The purpose of this role is to Set direction for, develop, and execute site industrial hygiene-related activities and programs. Supports site management and personnel assuring all are protected against health hazards. Creates competitive edge by championing changes for improvements in ways of protecting people. Drives results by developing and executing changes. Liberates potential in people by building trust to create win-win strategies for change.

Job Description

  • Provides industrial hygiene expertise to site. Participates on PHA teams as needed. Evaluates chemical, physical, biological, and ergonomic exposures and makes appropriate control recommendations. 
  • Functions as site radiation safety officer (RSO). Maintains site radioactive materials license through Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ).
  • Functions as site asbestos expert. Maintains LDEQ accreditation as asbestos inspector and asbestos contractor/supervisor.  Takes an active lead in asbestos inventory control and remediation as needed.
  • Manages chemical exposure assessment for the site documented in the Job Exposure Profile system. Updates and improves the system as needed. Schedules and performs exposure assessments for site. Works effectively with contractors to provide advice for exposure assessment.
  • Evaluates and revises written industrial hygiene programs. Responsible for content of hazard communication program, respiratory protection program, hearing conservation program, all other PPE-related programs, radiation protection program, ergonomics program, chemical hygiene plan, and blood borne pathogens program. Functions as respiratory protection program administrator.
  • Responsible for developing and providing training for unit trainers in respiratory protection and chemical protective clothing. Provides annual training in asbestos gasket removal. Provides other training as needed.
  • Functions as TSCA/FIFRA lead for the site.
  • Functions as team leader or team member for incident investigations.

Qualifications

Critical Knowledge:  The incumbent must possess 5-10 yrs. experience and a level of education equivalent to a B.S. Degree in Science or Engineering. An advanced degree (M.S.) in industrial hygiene is highly desirable. Professional certification as an industrial hygienist (CIH) through the American Board of Industrial Hygiene is required. Professional certification as a safety professional (CSP) through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals is also highly desirable.

Critical Skills: The incumbent must possess a broad base of experience in all industrial hygiene-related matters. The incumbent must have a good understanding of site manufacturing processes and tasks, have well-developed technical skills for proficiency at assessing problems, an understanding of toxicology principles to understand occupational health risks, and be able to communicate equally as well in technical and lay terms to effectively advise site management and personnel of proper courses of action. Strong communications and interpersonal skills are essential.
