The Director of Technical Design is a strategic and hands-on leader responsible for driving fit excellence, technical accuracy, and product integrity across all categories. This role partners closely with Design, Product Development, Merchandising and global factories to translate creative vision into high-quality, production-ready garments while maintaining brand standards in fit, quality and timelines.A Day in the Life:
Strategic Leadership & Vision
- Establish and implement fit standards to ensure consistency in sizing, grading, construction, and overall fit across all product categories
- Lead and mentor the technical design team, fostering collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement
- Drive cross-functional alignment by partnering with Design, Product Development, Production and Merchandising to support business objectives
- Proactively identify risks, resolve challenges, and remove barriers to ensure seamless execution
- Stay informed on industry trends, competitive benchmarks, and emerging technologies to enhance fit and construction techniques
Technical Design & Product Development
- Oversee the development, production, execution, and accuracy of all technical specifications and tech packs from concept through production
- Partner with Design to interpret creative vision and provide technical solutions that maintain aesthetic integrity
- Review samples at all stages, patterns, and construction to ensure alignment with design intent and brand standards
- Anticipate technical challenges and recommend alternative solutions without compromising design
Fit & Quality Control
- Lead and conduct fit sessions, evaluating garments for fit, proportion, and construction; provide clear direction for corrections
- Analyze and resolve fit issues through garment pinning, pattern adjustments, and technical expertise
- Ensure consistency of fit and proportion across the full size range, including oversight of grading and spec approvals
- Approve final fit and construction standards prior to production, ensuring alignment with brand expectations
Vendor & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Serve as the primary technical point of contact for factories, providing clear and actionable guidance on fit, construction, and specifications
- Communicate detailed fit comments and technical corrections, ensuring alignment between requested changes and final execution
- Partner with Product Development, Pattern Makers, and Sample Makers to ensure timely approvals and quality standards are met
