Position Summary
The Integrated System Planning (ISP) organization is focused on the long-term cohesive strategy to meet generation, transmission and distribution needs across our electric and natural gas systems. As an engineer within the Modeling and Analytics group you will be responsible for developing power system models, conducting power system analysis, and integrating knowledge gained from these results across energy delivery platforms. Our goal is to meet the needs of our customers by delivering a carbon free electric portfolio and maintaining system reliability. Principal Engineer
Base Salary $109,300 - $152,766 plus 12% Annual Incentive Plan
Viewed as a technical engineer or subject matter expert for the organization in the application of advanced theories, concepts, principles, and processes within and beyond ISP.
Identifies gaps and initiates projects and processes to meet business demand. • Acts as an advisor to management.
Is proficient at scoping the type of studies required to review system performance.
Essential Responsibilities - Principal Engineer
Directs and runs power system simulations.
Can expect many complex and interdisciplinary issues to be within their scope of work.
Will lead multiple complex projects.
General work is self-directed and often self-initiated. Work and analysis will generally have wide sweeping ramifications for the business.
Serves as an ISP Modeling and Analytics spokesperson. Acts as an advisor to management. Assists management in workflow management/distribution within the department.
Works as established SME for modeling and analysis processes, procedures, and standards compliance.
Perform duties of Senior Engineer as needed.
Minimum Requirements - Principal Engineer
Required bachelor’s degree in engineering from ABET accredited curriculum.
9+ years relevant engineering experience with PE (Professional Engineer) registration required; 15+ years relevant engineering experience without PE.
Ability to demonstrate the unique technical skills and core competencies for this engineering level established & documented by the organization.
Preferred Qualifications - Principal Engineer
Advanced degree in power system engineering encouraged.
Professional Engineer registration.
Broad understanding of power system steady-state analysis, including power flow analysis, contingency analysis, short-circuit analysis, power system dynamics, including small-signal stability analysis, transient and frequency stability analysis, electromagnetic transient analysis.
HVDC, FACTS, IBR and synchronous machines modeling, as well as their interactions in modern power systems.
Senior Engineer
Base Salary $94,600 - $126,134 plus 10% Annual Incentive Plan
Seen as an expert within the field of transmission modeling and analysis.
Ownership of multiple projects and/or processes.
Assigned large scale analysis projects which may require the coordination of multiple engineers.
Represents the Modeling and Analytics team at internal and external venues.
Identifies gaps in processes and works to improve functionality. • Problems and tasks are given to this engineer with little direction.
Oversees studies performed by less senior engineers.
Essential Responsibilities - Senior Engineer
Performs modeling development, modeling reviews and analysis of Xcel Energy assets using PSSE, PSLF, TARA, DSA Tools or similar software.
Leads and performs modeling and analysis activities for steady state and stability simulations.
Effectively communicates the results of studies and department endeavors to a wide range of audiences through written and verbal means.
