This is a Career Service Health Safety Specialist position working in the Lee County Department of Health.
The Health Safety Specialist is an emergency management support specialist position reporting directly to the Public Health Services Manager A - SES. The incumbent serves as the local safety coordinator with the Florida Department of Health in Lee County, chairing the local safety committee. The incumbent coordinates the Safety and Loss Prevention program; assists in the development, coordination, and implementation of safety plans, programs, and systems; and provides assistance coordinating maintenance and repair efforts to locations leased by the Florida Dept of Health in Lee County. The incumbent is responsible for coordination of logistical functions of the Preparedness division. This person also assists with emergency duty planning and operations.
Safety and Loss Prevention Coordinator
- Serves as chair for the DOH-Lee Safety Committee, conducts quarterly meetings, and collaborates with committee members to develop procedures to assess risk and adherence to regulations; recommend solutions to issues, improvement opportunities, or new prevention measures.
- Maintains and updates DOH-Lee safety and loss prevention plans, policies, and procedures.
- Coordinate with the Facilities Services Analyst for semi-annual site safety inspections. Report on findings to PHP Director and Central Office. Assist Facilities Analyst to resolve any identified safety issues.
- Reviewing monthly workers’ compensation casualty claims reports and reporting discrepancies to central office.
- Ensure that all safety equipment is properly inspected; tasks may include periodic facility fire inspections, inspection of fire extinguishers, first-aid kit maintenance, and AED inspections.
- Communicate safety information/updates to employees via email, staff meetings, newsletters, posters, or flyers.
- Maintain a roll call roster of employees participating in fire drills within designated locations.
- Conduct, manage, and schedule Fit Testing for CHD staff.
- Maintain safety records according to applicable records management retention requirements.
- Investigate employee work related accidents to determine root causes and corrective actions. Assist supervisors with reporting employee work related accidents and completing required forms.
- Work with their local training coordinator to develop trainings based on employees’ jobs, the local work environment, required equipment, etc.
- Assist with implementing and maintaining safety programs such as the floor wardens.
Public Health Preparedness Planner
- Assist in coordinating and directing emergency management planning and operations during emergency situations.
- Assist with meeting all related preparedness accreditation standards and program deliverables.
- Attends meetings, conferences, and workshops related to emergency preparedness and produces appropriate summaries and reports.
- Serve as tertiary group manager for the warning and notification system.
- Assist with emergency duty training for DOH-Lee staff and volunteers.
- Provide guidance and technical assistance to department directors on preparedness practices and principles.
- Review and edit Emergency Operations Plan and Annexes, as assigned by the program director.
- Serve as a member of the department’s incident management team (IMT) (e.g., Safety Officer, Planning Section Chief, or Logistics Section Chief).
- Prepare emergency status reports that describe response and recovery efforts within DOH-Lee.
