The Speech Language Pathologist serves children and adults with a range of developmental, intellectual, physical, and neurological disabilities, with a specialized focus in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). This position is responsible for the evaluation, implementation, and ongoing support of communication systems tailored to individuals with complex communication needs. This role spans across clinical, educational, community, and home environments, requiring a dynamic, compassionate professional who is committed to inclusive and functional communication solutions that enhance each individual’s quality of life.


Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Conducts comprehensive assessments of speech, language, cognitive-communication, and swallowing abilities across age groups.
  • Performs AAC evaluations and determine appropriate low-tech and high-tech AAC systems to meet individual needs.
  • Develops and implements individualized therapy plans that integrate AAC systems and functional communication goals.
  • Provides training and support to clients, families, caregivers, and interdisciplinary staff on AAC device use and maintenance.
  • Monitors client progress makes adjustments to communication plans, and documents outcomes in accordance with organizational and regulatory standards.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams (OTs, PTs, educators, case managers, behavior specialists, and medical staff) to deliver coordinated care.
  • Supports clients across various environments (schools, homes, clinics, day programs, community settings) to generalize communication skills.
  • Advocates for access to AAC funding, device procurement, and communication rights.
  • Educates stakeholders on communication accessibility, language development, and the importance of AAC for individuals with complex needs.
  • Stays current on emerging AAC technologies, tools, and best practices through professional development and continuing education.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of a variety of speech and language delays and disorders.
  • Ability to use standardized, modified and criterion-referenced assessment procedures and techniques to identify a communicative need.
  • Ability to document findings and recommendations in comprehensive written evaluation reports.
  • Ability to identify goals and objectives and/or strategies and procedures that will meet identified needs, provide a variety of options when necessary, and guide a team through the choices.
  • Communication skills necessary to respond to questions and to clearly explain, the options, research and theories behind speech and language recommendations to clients, families, caregivers, service providers and others involved in supporting a client.
  • Ability to respond to questions in a clear, user-friendly and professional manner.
  • Ability to organize time effectively and remain flexible in order to meet occasionally competing demands also requiring time and attention.


Education & Experience:

  • Master's degree in Speech Pathology required.
  • State of Maine Speech-Pathologist license is required.
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence.
  • A minimum of 2 years clinical experience with individuals with disabilities; AAC experience preferred, but not required. 


Job Types: Full-time (Mon.-Fri.).  Part-time and Contract opportunities also available. 


Location: In-person (Auburn, Maine)


Rate of pay: $53,000-$73,000 annually - based on experience level.
