Job Summary

Under directive supervision, does repair and maintenance work, electric arc and oxyacetylene welding on equipment and material, except that which requires a certified welder; does machinist work on equipment and materials.

Job Description

PERFORMED UNDER DIRECTIVE SUPERVISION:

Checking and inspecting equipment for defect in operation.

Troubleshooting, making repairs and overhauling equipment such as pumps, centrifugal and reciprocating air compressors, fans, piping, valves, hydraulic couplings, material handling equipment, pulverizer mills, hoists, soot blowers, supports, casings, burners, ash pits, ash lines, etc., including necessary dismantling, preparing for shipment and reassembling.

Performing alignment of pumps, motors, and gearboxes.

Make welding repairs on station and yard equipment (including cutting of pipe), such as tanks, structures, etc.

Packing pumps and valves for high and low pressure service; relining cylinders; fitting positions, collars, sleeves, couplings and gears on station and yard equipment.

Operating the turbine room crane and material handling crane for general plant use and maintenance.

Inspecting, fitting, repairing motors, pumps, fans, mills, hoists, cranes, material handling equipment, etc.

Completing necessary documentation of work assignments performed.

Recommending modifications, revisions and improvements in work procedures and methods.

Making special tools, dies, jigs and fixtures.

Using machinist’s hand tools, such as files, scrapers, chisels, reamers, taps and measuring instruments.

Taking care of machine tool work required for all plant maintenance.

Laying out drilling; assembling and erecting structural steel, plates and pipe.

Exercising proper safety precautions for employees assigned to assist in the work.

Instructing and training employees in this and lower classifications in their work.

Performing other similar or less skilled work.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must meet the Company’s requirements as to General Qualifications; must have all the qualifications of Maintenance Apprentice (Mechanical and Electrical); and, in addition:

Must be able to work from specifications, detailed drawings and blue prints.

Must be able to climb ladders and work at higher elevations on platforms, scaffolds, grating, etc.

Must be able to measure, cut, thread and bend pipe of conduit of all sizes.

Must be able to use measuring instruments like micrometers, calipers, screw pitch gauges, thickness gauges, levels, etc.

Must have thorough knowledge of the mechanical and electrical equipment in the stations.

Must know the names of individual parts of equipment and be able to identify them in stores supply.

Must have thorough knowledge of the principles involved in the fusion of metals.

Must have a thorough knowledge of rigging methods for work within the scope of this job.

Must have a thorough knowledge of modern machine shop methods and practices and the use and care of tools.

Must be capable of directing work of several others assigned to assist.

Must be completely familiar with proper tagging and switching procedures utilized in the station.

Must demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the job classification through the medium tests, including material taught training courses and practical job experience.
