Description/Objectives
Provide engineering insight and support for development and integration of a Nuclear Engine Controller. Expertise is needed in Avionics Architecture and Engine Control System design and development in the following areas:
The successful candidate will:
Define nuclear engine controller functionality
Sensors needed to
Trigger control and safety systems
Turn engine valves on/off and engine control valve settings based on specific conditions
Commands to control drum drive power distribution box and/or control drum driver controller (TBD)
Establish physical/electrical interfaces
Define interface Inputs/outputs
Continue the development of the Engine Controller requirements document
Support the make/buy decision process for procurement vs shift of effort to inhouse design/development/test organizations(s)
Provide integration of nuclear propulsion systems across multiple engine controller devices
Support design work in the areas of instrumentation, harness and ignition systems as well as development and building of engine controller(s). Experience in testing as well as anomaly resolution is mandatory. The successful candidate will be required to support any standing and new issues that may arise.
Skills Required
Personnel must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and 20 years of experience. Knowledge of engine controller hardware and associated testing.
Must have at least 20 years’ experience with the Avionics Systems
Must have extensive experience with engine test and verification closure processes
Must have a Bachelor of Science in Engineering or equivalent
Must be able to write and execute avionics test procedures
Must be able to analyze test data for performance verification and anomaly resolution
Desired Skills
Experience with nuclear engine avionics and control systems desired but not required.
Essential Functions
Work Environment:
Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (5%). Requires ability to work at a computer for long periods of time (100%).
Physical Requirements:
Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).
Equipment and Machines:
Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).
Attendance:
Normal workday 7:30-4:30, Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.
