Under general supervision, The School-Based Medical Assistant (MA) assists with the coordination and management of primary health services and operations, including maintaining community partnerships, such as Denver Public Schools. The MA performs clerical support specialist duties to include outreach, registration, maintenance of records and files, maintenance of a smooth and organized patient flow and facilitation of non-patient care communications. This role also assists Primary Care Practitioners in medication and immunization maintenance and administration, patient rooming and other activities associated with medical assisting, and site regulation maintenance (this may include but is not limited to: Joint Commission readiness, lab licensing and immunization compliance) in addition to collecting and processing laboratory specimens. Performs and records results of moderately complex and waived testing, performs and records QC and maintains instrumentation.
Essential Functions:
- Accurately and efficiently takes vital signs and basic historical patient data. Identifies abnormal patient findings. Communicates patient concerns or significant changes in patient’s health status to provider or RN. (30%)
- Assists in the coordination of clerical information necessary to provide patient care. This may include, but is not limited to: Referrals, Assisting patients with appointments if necessary. Faxing of pertinent medical information. Ordering and maintenance of office and medical equipment. Maintaining patient medical record and other information. Ensures patient confidentiality. Assists patients with the arrangement of tests and treatments prescribed by physician. Assisting the provider or registered nurse in providing routine treatment instructions. Test results & patient follow-up. (30%)
- Assists provider in setting up for procedures including aseptic and sterile techniques; provides safe administration of medications and immunizations (oral, IM, subcutaneous, and/or intradermal); obtains EKGs, orders appropriate tests as directed by provider; and schedules specialty and follow-up appointments as directed by provider. (15%)
- Performs phlebotomy and Point Of Care (POC) procedures after competency verified. Maintains safe collection and processing of laboratory specimens (blood, urine, sputum, and stool). Accurately result in patient’s medical record in Epic. Maintains accurate Quality Control and adheres to The Joint Commission requirements. (10%)
- Prepares patients for examinations, assists with examinations, cast or splint applications, minor procedures a variety of other medically related tasks within their scope of knowledge. (5%)
- Prepares exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments/supplies. Prepares and maintains clinical and office supplies and equipment for treatments, including sterilization and restocking of exam and treatment rooms. (5%)
- Responsible for upkeep and maintenance of laboratory equipment including, but not limited to, centrifuge and GeneXpert. (5%)
Education:
- Completion of a clinical Medical Assistant training program resulting in a diploma or Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), or a registered apprentice program certificate. Required or
- Accredited program of Licensed Practical Nursing with an active LPN license Required
Work Experience:
- Completion of a 160 hour Externship Required or
- 6 months direct patient care experience in an outpatient setting Required
- One year of experience working in school-age student services, preferred.
Licenses:
- BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association or American Red Cross Required and
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of medical office practice.
- Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.
- Knowledge of and the ability to use medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
- Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
