About the role
Amazon is seeking a software leader for the team that owns Amazon's software languages and runtimes. Amazon’s internal developers build services primarily in Java and Rust. As the manager for this team you will lead teams and a group of very senior engineers that contribute to the development of the Java and Rust programming languages, delivering innovations used inside of Amazon, and also contributing to the evolution of these languages outside of Amazon.
Our Rust maintainers lead open source investments in the Rust language, compiler, libraries, and tooling for Rust, which is seeing accelerating adoption inside and outside of Amazon. The Java team team builds internal distributions of the OpenJDK project as well as the public Amazon Corretto project, one of the largest Java installations in the world. We are proud contributors to the OpenJDK project, and excited to continue to move the language forward with innovative work that we contribute.
As the leader of this organization, you will influence all divisions of Amazon in their continued evolution with this critical building blocks. Large-scale Amazon applications in all divisions of the company rely on our Java and Rust teams to deliver innovations that improve performance and reliability.
Key job responsibilities
This role requires empathy and customer obsession. Your teams serve as an interface between Amazon and multiple open source project lead by a diverse set of communities, foundations, and commercial entities. As such you will need to influence the partnerships your team and Amazon fosters with the communities as well as becoming a trust partner yourself.
You will own the yearly planning along with the long-term strategy for these programming languages at Amazon, the front-line support for builders at Amazon depending on the security, correctness, and performance of these languages through hiring and growing a diverse team of industry luminaries and senior engineers.
We are open to hiring candidates to work out of one of the following locations:
Seattle, WA, USA
- 10+ years of engineering experience
- 5+ years of engineering team management experience
- 10+ years of planning, designing, developing and delivering consumer software experience
- Experience partnering with product or program management teams
- Experience managing multiple concurrent programs, projects and development teams in an Agile environment
- Experience with open source, especially working with a strong and active external open source community
- Experience with developing core software components such as core libraries, programming languages, and/or compilers

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $176,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $342,300/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits. Basic Qualifications
- 10+ years of engineering experience
- 5+ years of engineering team management experience
- 10+ years of planning, designing, developing and delivering consumer software experience
- Experience partnering with product or program management teams
