Summary

This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by Performing Electrocardiograms in a variety of settings, including the Emergency Department and all in-house locations. Performs Holter and Event monitor placements. Designated EKG technicians may perform general floor respiratory therapy procedures in accordance with education requirements.

Job Description

Job Duties

  • Ensure that all accurate and clinically relevant information is communicated with patients, their families and co-workers at hand offs and other times as needed. Take all measures necessary to ensure that the appropriate and involved parties have communicated necessary information in order to allow for the best possible patient outcome.
  • Performs specialty EKG's, such as pediatric, pacemaker magnet check and right-sided EKGs.
  • Reconciles all EKGs with order and assigns to physicians appropriately and in timely manner.
  • Differentiates STAT EKG process and prioritizes EKG completion. 
  • Maintains equipment and able to troubleshoot issues that arise.
  • Assists with the training of new employees, student interns, and employees of other departments.
  • Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.
  • Performs EKG services according to established procedure of the hospital.
  • Distinguishes critical values and follows through on provider notification for inpatients and outpatients.
  • Places EKG's in appropriate physician's box, collects and sorts interpreted tracings and performs all necessary paperwork including distribution of reports.
  • Performs event monitor and holter monitor placement with appropriate paperwork.
  • Performs general respiratory therapy if applicable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Basic EKG interpretation skills preferred; some medical terminology preferred.

Professional Experience

  • Cardiology, nursing, EMT services, Medical Assistant, Nursing Assistant, Respiratory Therapy or equivalent work experience preferred.

Education

  • High school education or GED equivalency required.

Licensure, Certification, Registration

  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification, in accordance with American Heart Association required.
