Technical Director, Claims - Commercial, Excess Surplus, and Specialty (Specialized Claims Programs)

What you can Expect: The Technical Director must understand and provide expertise for diverse and varied Casualty Claims programs, contributing strategically to vital and sophisticated decision-making processes. We are seeking highly educated, seasoned, and technically proficient Claims professionals who are adept at collaboration, development, and mentorship. Your guidance will be actionable and solution-oriented, focusing on coverage, investigation, evaluation, and risk management throughout the claim lifecycle, with an emphasis on severity control and proper coverage application. 

• Support a complex casualty claims team overseeing a range of diverse program businesses. 

• Research and apply case law/statutes, litigation procedures, and current industry issues and trends are essential. 

• Review and assess legal contracts related to the business risks we insure, including opportunities for risk transfer and the impact of contractual obligations on specific insurance policies. 

• Challenge traditional thinking and promote critical thinking aimed at quality, compliance, and severity management. 

• Manage litigation, including the direct handling and oversight of specialized claim programs such as Oil and Gas, Ocean Marine, Complex Commercial Construction, Premises Liability Claims, Manufacturers/Products Defect Claims, Pollution Liability, Liquor Liability, and multi-district or class action Liability Claims. 

 

The ideal candidate will have:  

• A minimum of 10-15 years of experience in complex litigated commercial liability claims, including handling a variety of complex specialty program claims, analyzing coverage under the policies, drafting effective coverage position letters, and communicating effectively. 

• A J.D. is preferred. 

• The ability to identify emerging issues, develop strategic plans, and communicate complex positions with partners in both Claims and Underwriting. 

• Experience in drafting and supporting the development of policy forms. 

• Experience as a corporate witness is valued.

As a Technical Director, you'll direct claims coverage and strategy by line of business or risk for Commercial, E&S, and Specialty. You'll drive technical oversight of claim matters by providing meaningful and effective consultative guidance, contributing to the Claims Division attainment of high quality claim outcomes. We’ll count on you to provide operational technical support and develop coverage training plans and strategies for the Claims Division. You'll identify, evaluate and communicate industry trend information and provide risk recommendations to the Claims and Underwriting Divisions.
