About ABCC: 

The Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission is an agency under the Office of the Massachusetts State Treasurer. The serving of alcohol in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is governed by M.G.L. Ch. 138. The ABCC is responsible for its enforcement and to provide uniform control over the sale, transportation, possession, purchase, and manufacture of alcoholic beverages in the state. The ABCC holds administrative hearings (remotely and in-person) pursuant to the Informal/Fair Hearing Rules under M.G.L. C.138, C.30A and 801 CMR §§ 1.02 and 1.03 for violations and Licensee’s appeals of a Local Licensing Authority action, among others.

Position Summary:

The ABCC College internship provides qualified students with practical work experience that compliments their academic course work, as well as course credit (if approved by the college or university). It also provides the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission (ABCC) Administration with an opportunity to involve college students in various aspects of legal administrative work. The ABCC College Internship is designed to provide students with an opportunity to integrate theory and practice. The internship is an unpaid, non-sworn position that varies from 8 hours to 40 hours per week, or as agreed by the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission Administration, selected intern, and college/university (if applicable). Students can gain valuable work experience, on-the-job training, and have an opportunity to develop a professional networking base for future positions in government service. All the requirements must be agreed to by the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission, the intern applicant, and the college/university (if applicable) before the internship starts.

Major Duties and Required Technical Skills:

  • Project assignments may include scanning primary source legal documents and data entry, research for compliance with the Public Records Request Law 950 CMR 32, and preparation of documents to be archived.

  • The intern assignments will vary and are designed to allow students the experience of document management for an administrative government agency and meet the needs of the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission.

  • Interns must be detail oriented, organized, ability to complete projects within timelines and under minimal supervision, and proficient in Microsoft office.

  • Interns are expected to keep a journal of activities to aid the evaluation process. The progress and oversight of individual interns is monitored by Executive Director or Program Coordinator or a designee and may be periodically reported to the college/university to which the intern belongs.
