Job Description

This is a grant-funded position.This position is located in the Toxicology Unit in Edmond, Oklahoma.

Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities for supporting laboratory operations, performing maintenance functions and completing non-technical routine laboratory tests and procedures under the direction of professional staff.

Major Work Duties:

  • Prepare samples for analyses for drugs and alcohol as requested in impaired driving cases.  This will include inventorying evidence, estimating volumes, and sorting vials.

  • Prepare instrumentation for analyses including monthly and daily quality control checks as well as perform maintenance.

  • Responsible for maintaining inventory levels of supplies used in the toxicology unit.  This will include submitting internal purchase requests, receiving ordered items, verifying purchases and other purchasing duties.

  • Responsible for various quality control tasks such as verifying lot numbers; documenting refrigerator temperatures; checking balances; and maintaining instruments and equipment including pipettes and hydrogen generators.

  • Check and document the following items to confirm proper function: eye wash stations, safety showers and fire extinguishers.  The technician will also disinfect the door handles, telephones, and other surfaces in the toxicology unit.

Typical Functions

  • Performs routine laboratory procedures such as preparation of media and basic preparation of slides and smears.

  • Conducts non-technical routine laboratory tests and procedures under the direction of professional staff.

  • Sets up and operates laboratory equipment in preparation for specimen examinations.

  • Opens, separates, numbers and arranges specimens for laboratory examination and trace results.

  • Maintains simple laboratory records and inventory for supplies and reagents.

  • Maintains laboratory equipment and supplies by cleaning and maintaining quality assurance records.

  • Maintains a clean and sanitary work area in accordance with standard laboratory practice and procedures.

Level Descriptor

This is the leadership level for incumbents who perform responsible, skilled tasks in completing a variety of laboratory tests or procedures and provide either direct or functional supervision and training to other technicians, temporary employees and students assigned to the laboratory.

Education and Experience

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of two years of experience in laboratory work performing laboratory procedures; or an equivalent combination of experience, substituting one college-level laboratory science course for each six months of required experience.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of a variety of standard laboratory procedures and techniques; of laboratory equipment and terminology; and of laboratory hazards and safety practices. Ability is required to receive and complete complex written and oral instructions on technical matters; to supervise the activities of subordinate laboratory staff; to operate laboratory equipment; and to write reports.
