Sentinels is on a mission to battle financial crime by developing software that detects money laundering.

We were founded in 2019 and currently are already a team of almost 100 people with 35 nationalities. Most of our teams are working from our Amsterdam office, and we also have presence in Groningen, Lisbon and London. This year we were acquired by Fenergo, an established Dublin-based Client Lifecycle Management company, that gives us financial stability and a lot of knowledge that will enable us to be even more successful in our mission to fight financial crime.

Senior Backend Engineer

The financial system is facing serious challenges. Banks and payment service providers are struggling to meet the requirements of regulators, and current Know Your Customer & Anti-Money Laundering solutions are falling short of needs. At the root of financial crime are felonies involving drugs, human trafficking, and terrorism.

But there’s hope! AI and machine learning offer the promise to catch criminals effectively. Here at Sentinels we are building cutting-edge AI software products to help financial institutions meet pressing regulatory requirements, reduce false positives, maximise their customer experience, and fight financial crime.

This is a hybrid role: we are working 1-2 days per week from our Amsterdam office (near Rokin metro).

Responsibilities

• Translating functional requirements into stable, working, high-performance software
• Writing scalable, robust, testable, efficient, and easily maintainable code
• Build large-scale, low latency distributed systems capable of processing billions of actions in real-time
• Design algorithms for real-time targeting and optimisation
• Play a role in architectural and design decisions, building toward an efficient distributed application and services architecture
• You will build services that gather data and make them available to our machine learning algorithms.

Requirements

• 5-8 years of experience developing and maintaining highly available backend systems
• Experience building scalable cloud native (SaaS) applications
• Understanding of modern software engineering practices in areas like CI/CD, test automation, microservices, distributed systems, and data management
• Solid understanding of general Computer Science concepts including data structures, concurrency, and recursion
• Experience with Real-time systems
• Multi-year proven experience in Python Development
• Computer science bachelor’s degree or relevant experience

Nice to have

• Familiarity with AWS cloud infrastructure
• Experience with Docker orchestration platforms and Kubernetes
• Experience working with JavaScript frameworks
• Technical leadership, ability to lead and mentor other engineers
• Experience with Elastic Search
