The Senior Engineering Manager plays a key role in executing high-impact initiatives as well as defining, running, and improving processes to increase the effectiveness of our engineering organizations.
As a Senior Engineering Manager you will work to identify challenges and enhancements for our engineering organization, then define, execute, and deliver programs to increase effectiveness of your team. You will work fluidly from the big picture to details so that the team can deliver complex cross-functional projects. You break through communication issues and effectively develop relationships with stakeholders of the organization. As our new Sr. Engineering Manager, you will lead the team and accelerate the development of our cutting-edge progressive web app and/or the client app for the US market using React.js, GraphQL/Apollo, Next.js, Node.js, and React Native.
What You'll Do
- Drive high standards and ensure the Web and Client teams performs at its best
- Design and lead the implementation of our web systems and client applications.
- Define creative, high quality and simple road maps based on org strategy and vision. Manage and report on the status of a portfolio of projects involving web and client technologies
- Analyze the needs of multiple stakeholders to create and support projects that address organizational and technical challenges and enhancements
- Promote a culture of documentation, mentorship and knowledge sharing within and across teams
- Track issues and proactively remove obstacles to drive momentum and progress. Identify communication gaps, manage issue escalations and provide support to teams balancing competing priorities. Drive results proactively.
- Lead cross-team projects and initiatives with product managers, engineering managers, and engineers, defining milestones, breaking down work, estimating efforts, driving the schedule through to launch
- Work productively in a fast-paced, cross-geo, remote-first environment
- Own engineer hiring and training for your team, and establish a long-term vision for the team’s growth
What You'll Need:
- At least 10 years of in-depth experience with Javascript ES6, React.js,modern CSS and/or iOS/Android development
- At least 5 years of experience inspiring, managing and mentoring engineers
- Experience with interdepartmental coordination
- Proven ability to attract, hire, and develop extraordinary engineers
- Experience working within Agile development workflows
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
Bonus Points:
- Experience optimizing Javascript performance on both client and server
- Experience with GraphQL/Apollo
- Experience with React Native
- Experience deploying services to Google Cloud Platform
- Experience managing Kubernetes clusters

The applicable salary range for each role is based on where the applicant lives and is aligned to one of 3 zones according to a cost of labor index in that geographic area. Our Talent Acquisition team can help answer any questions about location after starting the recruiting process.
Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of job-related factors, which may include education, training, experience, location, business needs, or market demands.
The expected base salary ranges for this role are below. These ranges may be modified in the future. In addition to base salary, Mercari’s total compensation package includes equity and a full range of physical, financial and well-being benefits. Zone 1* $156,000 - $234,000
Zone 2** $140,400 - $210,600
Zone 3*** $124,800 - $187,200
