New York Road Runners is an Equal Opportunity Employer About The TeamOur Event Development and Production department develops and produces NYRR events from concept all the way through execution in a way that fulfills NYRR’s mission. NYRR produces 56 races per year, in addition to the TCS New York City Marathon, and additional events within each race. The events team is responsible for physical site management, volunteer management, hospitality and special events, safety & security, and managing our Warehouse and all race collateral.About The Role Please note that this role has an intended onboarding date of December 15th, 2025. Employees' first event is projected for January 2026. This position will report to the Head of Talent Acquisition, and at events will report to the Event Manager and/or the Area Lead(s). This position is responsible for providing on-site cycling support for Weekly NYRR Events, serving as a mobile set of eyes and ears along the course, helping to clear the roadway from patrons, and providing status updates and runner information to the Area Lead. Individuals best suited for this position should be comfortable riding long distances and be strong communicators. Please note that shifts can range anywhere. Between 3 to 6 hours, depending on the length of the race. They would also have an excellent customer service approach and positive attitude, be comfortable with crowd control and public interaction, and must be very vocal and willing to direct volunteers, participants, and the public in a courteous, professional manner. Cyclists will be provided with the proper equipment prior to or on race day to perform all tasks which include a bicycle and helmet (if needed), handheld radios, uniform, safety vest, and other miscellaneous equipment for the role. Key Responsibilities Include:
- Lead the runner pack, and ride throughout the Event Course to ensure no obstacles are present that may interrupt or interfere with the race event. Provide course updates to the Event/Course Lead serving as the eyes and ears along the course.
- Look for and report any potholes or safety hazards along the route that could cause harm to runners or impact the runners’ experience.
- Support in the maintenance of the designated area of the course, ensuring the safety of all Runners, Volunteers, Staff and Spectators.
- Ensure that the course elements (stations and signage) are placed and installed as listed on the Event Logistics.
- Maintain a clear course and oversee the removal of any (unofficial) vehicles, spectators, pedestrians and bikes to provide runners a safe course
- Ride along with Sweep Van, which are designated to support athletes who would like to discontinue their race.
- Communicate whereabouts of the Sweep package via radio.
