Job Summary:
The Senior Mechanical CAD Designer – Contractor supports Principal and Senior Engineers with the creation, maintenance, and efficiency of mechanical component designs, system level CAD models, and Components Off the Shelf (COTS) item modeling. This individual must have expert level CAD skills with experience modeling machined components, injection molded plastic, sheet metal, complex weldments, and utilizing toolbox and library functions. This individual works as part of a team in a fast-paced environment and must have the ability to think creatively, to solve problems and have a practical mechanical aptitude.
Responsibilities:
- Apply mechanical knowledge and engineering principles and practices to design and document various mechanical components and systems.
- Apply a disciplined approach and best practices to managing CAD information.
- Clean up of third-party models to reduce load times.
- Maintain mates and functional relationships across multiple configurations.
- Maintain data cards.
- Assign materials and manage the material library database.
- Utilize toolbox components when possible/practical.
- Maintain the fidelity and functionality of large assemblies and configurations.
- Participate in product design activities, brainstorming, and concept development under the direction of principal engineers
- Develop system level drawings and definitions for mechanical parts and systems.
- Develop system designs, including actual CAD design of these systems.
- Assist engineering staff to develop specifications for various components and work with engineering staff to ensure products meet internal and customer requirements, identifying nonconformances and proactively works to identify possible solutions.
- Evaluate supplier specifications & compliance data to ensure a complete data package exists for COTS items.
- Assist in troubleshooting issues with mechanical systems, which may include building mock-ups or conducting tests to further the design.
- Build, validate, and submit engineering change orders (ECO’s) using SolidWorks PDM workflows and company PLM system.
- Contribute to team growth by completing projects in a timely manner.
- Interface with remote CAD detailers and designers.
- Interface with global team contributors on a scheduled basis.

Position Qualifications:
- Associate’s degree, or technical certificate in Mechanical Design, CAD Design, Engineering, or Engineering Technology field with a minimum of (8) Years of Experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering with minimum of (5) years of professional experience where significant CAD usage and expert level knowledge can be demonstrated.
- Non-degreed candidates, or those holding only a technical certificate, will be considered with a minimum of (10) years of professional CAD use experience and a SolidWorks recognized certificate at professional level or higher.
- Proficient with SolidWorks PDM and workflows, and specific tools & techniques including but not limited to:
- Working with large assemblies >3,000 individual items.
- Designing and detailing structural weldments.
- Designing and detailing sheet metal.
- Developing and utilizing toolbox and design libraries.
- Developing and maintaining multiple configurations.
- Developing and utilizing routing to design piping and electrical systems, including supports.
- Developing, utilizing, and controlling skeleton parts/sketches to define the interface/boundaries of multiple subsystems so that subsystem work can be dispersed throughout a large team of contributors without restricting the efficiency of the top level assembly
- Experience exchanging large amounts of CAD data with stakeholders using different CAD systems, reconciling data, and maintaining the master document.
- Familiar with ANSI Y14 drafting standards
- Proficient with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerance (GD&T) principles.
- Effective communicator, capable of concisely presenting highly technical information to internal and external customers, as well as effectively communicating with suppliers.
