Job Summary:
Reporting to the Shift Manager of the assigned area, the Clinical Services Technician (CST) performs duties under the direction of the Registered Nurse/Charge Nurse. Responsible for providing high quality individualized basic care activities within the Clinical Services Technician scope of practice. This individual ensures a safe, healthy environment that encourages socialization and empowerment. This position is subject to overtime, weekend, holiday and shift work, standby, and callback assignments.
Position Accountabilities
- Assist with intake information on patient.
- Observes patient behavior and responds appropriately to crisis, anxiety, panic or other behavioral states.
- Encourages patients to participate in social, educational, and recreational activities.
- Demonstrates implementation of least restrictive interventions when dealing with agitated or assaultive patients.
- Physically restrains and/or secludes patients as required and only upon the direction of a physician or registered nurse.
- Uses only DMC/DBHC approved techniques when physically managing agitated or assaultive behavior.
- Serves as a role model for patient in the areas of personal hygiene, appearance, and social interaction; and provides guidance to individual clients in recreational or other socializing activities.
- Monitors patient status and reports findings to nursing or appropriate therapy support staff.
- Charts clear and concise notes, maintaining complete and accurate records.\
- Act quickly and safely with patients exhibiting agitated or violent behavior.
- Participates in activities within the organization that support performance improvement.
- Develops role model relationships and maintains therapeutic boundaries with patients.
- Independently leads and/or facilitates groups.
- Follows the multidisciplinary, goal oriented care plan for each patient in collaboration with members of the health care team and provides care based on that plan.
- Demonstrates appropriate use of restraints per DMC policy and procedures.
- Ensures patient safety by implementing safety measures with specific consideration of patient’s functional and developmental age.
- Competent in all routine skills within the CST scope of practice including, but not limited to, (1) assistance with activities of daily living, such as bathing, feeding, ambulating, toileting, (2) safe use of any medical equipment, and (3) measurements such as vital signs, weights, calorie count, and intake and output
- Assists nurses in maintaining integrity of patient belongings.
- Demonstrates the ability to provide care in emergency situations and follows established emergency procedures.
- Completes legible, accurate and timely documentation of all nursing care provided to patients.
Minimum Education: High School graduate preferred.
Minimum Experience/Skills:
- 6+ months related experience providing direct services for patients/clients in a mental health, substance abuse, or social service agency setting is preferred.
- Knowledge of the needs, problems, attitudes and behavioral patterns of mentally disordered individuals and substance abusers.
- Knowledge of Mental Health programs and community resources.
- Behavioral health principles and methods of relating to individuals experiencing behavioral health problems.
- Verbal de-escalation and communication skills. Knowledge of mental health patient rights.
License/Certificates/Credentials: BLS for Healthcare Providers, Behavioral management training defined as Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) is required within 30 days of hire and must be maintained.
Physical Demands:
- Frequent standing/walking.
- Lift/position up to 50 lbs.
- Push/pull up to 50 lbs of force.
- Reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, manual dexterity and mobility, ability to move quickly.
Vision Requirements: Ability to adjust vision sufficiently to perform nursing duties
Working Conditions: Regularly exposed to the risk of contagious and blood borne diseases, subject to varying and unpredictable situations, exposure to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries, illness), emergency and crisis situations, subject to irregular hours, occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries, occasional exposure to radiation hazards, radioactive substances, and biohazards.
