About the role

High Point University, an NCAA Division I member of the Big South Conference, invites applications for the position of Associate Head Coach, Track & Field. Reporting directly to the Director of Track & Field / Cross Country, the Associate Head Coach serves as the primary day-to-day leader of the men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field programs while assisting in the strategic direction of the overall track & field and cross-country program.

The Associate Head Coach is responsible for coaching assigned event areas, coordinating daily team operations, assisting with recruiting, mentoring student-athletes, supervising assistant coaches as assigned, and promoting a championship culture that aligns with the mission and values of High Point University Athletics.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated success coaching at the NCAA, professional, or elite club level.
  • Proven recruiting experience and ability to identify high-level student-athletes.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.

Knowledge, Skills, Ability:

  • Ability to travel extensively and work evenings and weekends
  • Proficient in the technical knowledge of their sport
  • Capability to instruct student-athletes and increase their athletic performance
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Knowledge of NCAA Division I rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Coaching Leadership

  • Serves as the primary day-to-day coach for the men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field programs.
  • Develops and implements comprehensive annual training plans in collaboration with the Director of Track & Field / Cross Country and event coaches.
  • Coordinates daily practice schedules, training sessions, and competition preparation.
  • Assists in developing team goals and performance benchmarks for conference, regional, and national competition.
  • Promotes a culture of accountability, discipline, competitive excellence, and student-athlete development.

Event Coaching

  • Coaches assigned event group(s) and oversee technical instruction, competition preparation, and performance analysis.
  • Collaborates with other event coaches to ensure consistent training philosophies across all disciplines.
  • Evaluates athlete progress using performance analytics and individualized development plans.
  • Prepares student-athletes to compete successfully at the Big South Conference, NCAA East Preliminary Round, and NCAA Championships.

Recruiting

  • Assists in developing and executing the program’s recruiting strategy.
  • Recruits academically and athletically qualified student-athletes at the local, regional, national, and international levels.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with high school and club coaches.
  • Evaluates prospective student-athletes through in-person recruiting, video analysis, and recruiting databases.
  • Assists with official and unofficial campus visits.

Program Operations

  • Coordinates meet entries, travel logistics, practice schedules, equipment management, and team operations as assigned.
  • Assists with planning and hosting home competitions.
  • Coordinates communication among coaching staff regarding travel, scheduling, and meet preparation.
  • Assists with roster management and scholarship recommendations.

Staff Leadership

  • Assists the Director in supervising assistant coaches, graduate assistants, volunteer coaches, and support staff.
  • Provides mentorship and leadership to younger coaches.
  • Promotes collaboration among all event groups to create one unified program.
  • Assumes leadership responsibilities in the Director’s absence.

Student-Athlete Development

  • Fosters academic success, leadership development, personal responsibility, and overall well-being.
  • Collaborates with Academic Services, Sports Medicine, Strength & Conditioning, Nutrition, and Mental Performance staff.
  • Supports student-athletes through individualized mentoring and goal setting.
  • Encourages community engagement and leadership opportunities.

Compliance

  • Maintains full compliance with NCAA, Big South Conference, and High Point University rules and regulations.
  • Completes all required compliance education and certifications.
  • Monitors recruiting activities, practice activities, and eligibility requirements.
  • Reports potential rules violations through appropriate institutional procedures.
