About the role

The Johns Hopkins University Research Animal Resources (RAR) is seeking an Inventory/Transfer Control Assistant to work along with Program Services Manager. The employee will assist with daily coordination of eSirius, an electronic barcoding system for animal inventory management in all central and satellite facilities, as well as coordination of animal transfers, and transgenic core transfers.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


ESirius Program Duties and Responsibilities (80%)

  • Use technology like computers, laptops, Zebra printers, apps, mobile scanners, and Electronic Data Capture systems.
  • Ensure that all caging within the central facilities and satellite locations contains the necessary RAR/eSirius information.
  • Assure protocols and standard operating procedures are properly adhered to.
  • Assure study timelines and institutional policies and data security are properly maintained.
  • Ensure data is accurate and that inventory data files are organized and current.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of data files and documentation.
  • Identify challenges faced in data collection and report them to program manager.
  • Report all technical issues to the program manager immediately.
  • Perform the inventory in all RAR animal facilities/Assigned areas twice a month.
  • Generate, print and transfer all cage cards request through eSirius or online request.
  • Printing breeding cage cards for all RAR investigators in central and satellite facilities.
  • Report to ACUC for “Person of Contact” (POC) who does not belong to the protocol.
  • Routine central facilities inspection for missing/illegible cage cards.
  • Generate/activate new cage cards for missing /illegible cage cards.
  • Activate/deactivate all collected tabs from central/satellite facilities.
  • Daily Collection of activate/deactivate tabs in the MRB facility.
  • Discard all misprinted cage cards.
  • Print stickers for all renewal protocols and schedule for pickup by lab managers.
  • Mange new shipment Auto-receive application for all central and satellite facilities.
  • Generate census reports in the eSirius system.
  • Generate quick cards in the eSirius system.
  • Attend all necessary training/team meetings with the supervisor and team members.


Transfer/Transgenic Coordinator Responsibilities (20%)

  • Communicate with investigators in regard to their submitted transfer requests.
  • Work closely and communicate with the veterinarian in regard to outbreaks and vet approvals.
  • Coordinate with veterinarians, vet technicians, and investigators if testing is needed before transfer approval.
  • Maintain the RAR Transfer/Transgenic Request Lists – Log.
  • Coordinate with transgenic core staff in regard to transgenic core Lists – Log.
  • Generate/activate cage cards for all transgenic core arrival.
  • Print transfer cage cards for transfers between JHU facilities that are being transferred by RAR staff.
  • Organize and maintain the transfer log forms that are created daily.
  • Communicate to the RAR staff concerning transfer requests and sending transfer log forms as needed.
  • Maintain the record of all complete/ incomplete/canceled transfers.

Physical Requirements

  • Will lift, carry or otherwise move and position objects and materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand and walk during inventory/inspection.
  • Remains in seated position for extended periods.
  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm, for example, using a keyboard.
  • Communication skills using the spoken word.
  • Able to see and hear within normal parameters.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Commitment to a collegial workplace


Preferred Qualifications
  • Sound knowledge of Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word.
  • Experience with inventory Management Software.
  • One year of laboratory animal care or related experience.
  • Knowledge of census
