Position Summary:
Assists a physical or occupational therapist by providing treatment as prescribed by the therapist, maintaining notes of patient's progress, instructing patients in proper use of equipment and proper positioning for exercises, and determining adaptive equipment needs. Must be licensed.
 

Examples of duties

Education/Experience:
Graduation from an accredited program for rehabilitation therapy assistant.
 
Licensing/Certification Requirements:

Must posses a valid Nevada license as Occupational Therapy Assistant (depending on area of assignment), or; valid license as Physical Therapy Assistant (depending on area of assignment). Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).

Knowledge of:
Standards of care in occupational or physical therapy; Adaptive equipment and its appropriate application; Disabilities, diseases and the effects of each on the body; Neurological, physical and psychological development stages for assigned age groups; department and hospital safety policies and practices; patient rights; age specific patient care practices; handling, storage, use and disposal of hazardous materials; department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures.

Skill in:
Setting up and using equipment specific to therapy discipline; Performing general office duties; Operating a personal computer; Mobility, transfer, ADL and gait training with or without assistive devices; Using proper body mechanics; Communicating with a wide variety of people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds under stressful conditions; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties; efficient, effective and safe use of equipment; efficient, effective and safe use of equipment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Mobility to work in a typical clinical setting, including stamina to stand and/or walk for an extended period of time, and strength to examine and treat varied individuals, vision to use standard therapy equipment and read printed materials including a VDT screen; and hearing and speech to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone. Strength and agility to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
