Key Responsibilities:
Artistic Execution & Scene Lighting
- Create photo-realistic and artistically compelling visuals for complex indoor and outdoor scenes through lighting.
- Establish the mood and visual narrative for gameplay spaces, working from concept art, reference materials, or art direction.
- Light cinematic sequences and cutscenes, ensuring a high level of visual quality and consistency with gameplay lighting.
- Use post-processing volumes and effects to enhance the final image, control exposure, and achieve specific visual styles.
Technical Performance & Optimization
- Utilise creative troubleshooting techniques to deliver well-performing real-time lighting solutions.
- Profile and optimize scenes to meet strict performance budgets for frame rate and memory, while maintaining visual quality.
- Ensure all lighting work adheres to technical standards and performance guidelines for consoles and PC.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work with Art Directors, Leads, and Designers in a collaborative environment to create beautiful and engaging gameplay spaces.
- Partner with Environment and VFX artists to ensure assets are optimized for lighting and that materials and textures work harmoniously.
- Clearly communicate progress, challenges, and solutions to leads and the broader team.
Pipeline, Mentorship & Process Improvement
- Assist with improving the lighting content pipeline, tools, and workflows.
- Work closely with others to maintain consistent lighting quality and technical standards across all game environments.
- Assist with pre-production scoping, scheduling, and documentation efforts.
- Mentor junior artists, provide constructive feedback, and share knowledge on best practices for lighting and rendering.
Key Requirements:
- Minimum 5 years of experience as a Lighting Artist in the game industry
- Has shipped at least one AA/AAA title
- Advanced understanding of UE5 lighting techniques and performance guidelines
- Strong understanding of how physically based rendering systems and lighting interact
- Excellent foundational art skills, including composition, shadow and light, design, structure, silhouette, and colour theory.
- Well-developed skills using post-processing to improve and adjust visuals
- Excellent understanding of physically based pipeline
- The ability to work effectively with detailed concept art or reference materials
Desirable
- Practical knowledge of Unreal Engine 5's Lumen system
- ARPG experience and / or souls like knowledge
