Following the acquisition of Arizona Mining, South32 is the new owner of the Hermosa Project, a high-grade zinc, lead and silver development option in Arizona.

ment, infrastructure and facilities development and community investment programs.


The location of this role is flexible between Tucson, Nogales or the Patagonia, Arizona office.

 

The Role

This role will be responsible for coordinating community consultation and social investment plans, the design and implementation of Hermosa’s community engagement plan and design, coordination and execution of the Social Performance plan.

 

Individual Accountabilities:

  • Champion the South32 operating model, values, Code of Conduct, and Care Strategy and relentlessly address deviations from these.
  • Planning, managing, maintaining, and representing South32 in day-to-day stakeholder engagement with both internal and external stakeholders and key community leaders.
  • Manage and execute South32 Social Performance Standard and local Hermosa plans, specifically managing social investment and social performance programs.
  • Work collaboratively with local organizations and government to support the company’s commitment to local procurement and  employment plans and regional economic development planning.
  • Work in close collaboration with the community specialists, Communications Principal, Government Affairs Manager, Project Director, and other roles at Hermosa and in the Americas.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with government agencies and civic and professional organizations in the region to execute the Hermosa Stakeholder Engagement Plan.
  • Collaborate with Hermosa business leadership and internal teams to assist in implementing community engagement and communications priorities based on impact and understanding of the project.
  • Advise Hermosa business leadership and internal teams on the state of local community programs and community sentiment to influence the design, planning, and implementation of the project.
  • Represent South32 Hermosa on local business and other community organization boards, publicly at local events, and other engagements as needed to further the company’s strategic objectives.
  • Implement stakeholder consultation activities on key Hermosa issues to identify concerns linked to the project and coordinate internally to address and respond properly to said concerns.
  • Coordinate the development and execution of the property management plan for Hermosa.
  • Coordinate development of land agreements with external stakeholders to support Hermosa operations, in collaboration with the community specialist.
  • Coordinate the development of the Cultural Heritage Management Plan and the implementation of an early and active engagement with Tribes about the Hermosa Project, in collaboration with the Tribal Affairs Specialist.
  • Generate the Social Performance internal reports required as part of South32’s framework.

 

Qualifications, Skills, and Expertise:

  • Bachelor’s degree in arts or science in a field that is linked to social Performance or mining.
  • At least 10 years of experience in community engagement and social investment including a demonstrated track record of working with multiple local organizations (non-profit, government, etc)
  • At least 5 years of specific experience in projects related to mining or energy sectors.
  • At least 3 years of experience in leading teams in charge of community engagement processes, social investment programs, and consultation for mining projects.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, legal codes, administrative procedures, government regulations, and agency rules as they relate to the social and environmental aspects of mining operations.
  • Knowledge of best international Social Performance practices applied to mining projects, including Human Rights and tribal engagement.
