Job Description:

Environmental Systems Mechanic Trainee - Under direct supervision, receives work experience and related training instruction to develop the knowledge and skill necessary to perform at the journey level upon completion of the training program to install, repair, alter, replace and maintain components of refrigeration, air conditioning and heating (all fuel types) equipment. Participates in training that is required to progress to eligibility for the Environmental Systems Mechanic I classification.

Environmental Systems Mechanic I - Under direct supervision, performs skilled work in the area of installation, repair, alteration, replacement and maintenance of components of refrigeration, air conditioning and heating (all fuel types) equipment.

Environmental Systems Mechanic II - Under general supervision, performs skilled work in the area of installation, repair, alteration, replacement and maintenance of components of environmental systems such as refrigeration, temperature control and heating (all fuel types) and support systems. Utilizes computerized building environmental automation systems to collect mechanical system performance data to ensure system reliability. 

Environmental Systems Mechanic III - Performs skilled work in the area of installation, repair, alteration, replacement and maintenance of components of environmental systems such as refrigeration, temperature control, chillers, heating (all fuel types) systems to include other support systems and emerging technology equipment. Utilizes computerized control systems to collect, analyze and modify mechanical system performance to ensure system reliability and system optimization.  

Minimum Eligibility Requirements:

Environmental Systems Mechanic Trainee - Ability to read, write and follow instructions. Upon completion of the training program, must be able to meet the minimum eligibility requirements for the Environmental Systems Mechanic I classification.

Environmental Systems Mechanic I - Four years of experience in refrigeration, heating or air conditioning work, including apprenticeship; and obtains refrigeration certificate of at least type 2 within first six months of employment; and possess a valid driver’s license and meet University’s Fleet Safety Program.

Environmental Systems Mechanic II - Six years of experience in temperature and computerized building environmental automation systems, refrigeration or air conditioning work, including apprenticeship, or has two years of experience in computerized building environmental automation systems and meets the minimum eligibility requirements of ESM I; or four years experience in above plus Journeyman’s license; has refrigeration certificate of at least type 2; and possess a valid driver’s license and meet University’s Fleet Safety Program. Two years of college/trade school preferred.

Environmental Systems Mechanic III - Eight years of experience in computerized building environmental automation systems, refrigeration or air conditioning work, including apprenticeship, with two years of experience in evaluating and recommending system optimization changes, or two years of experience in evaluating and recommending system optimization changes and meets the minimum eligibility requirements of ESM II; has refrigeration certificate of at least type 2; possess a valid driver’s license and meet University’s Fleet Safety Program; and Journeyman license required. Two years of college/trade school preferred.
