As a Registered Nurse supporting an Ambulatory Oncology Clinic team at the University of Arizona Cancer Center, you will work with like-minded staff who strive to go above and beyond for their patients. You will apply sound judgment, clinical expertise, and execute critical nursing interventions to a diverse population within the patient care setting. Through conducting patient assessments and developing and implementing nursing care plans, you will foster quality outcomes while working closely with prestigious Medical and Surgical Oncologists at this NCI-designated Cancer Center—an excellent opportunity to continue growing and developing in your nursing career.
In this specialized Ambulatory Oncology float nurse role, you will leverage your oncology nursing knowledge and organizational skills in a unique capacity. Rather than being assigned to a single team, you will adapt to cover the duties of any core disease team RN colleague during vacations or sick calls, floating between specific cancer type teams for periods ranging from a single day to several weeks. When not covering colleagues, you will provide flexible support by floating into teams as an additional resource or partnering with specific teams to enhance patient flow during high-activity clinic days or weeks.
This is a full-time position, scheduled 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm no on call, nights, or weekends. You will play a pivotal role within our cancer center as the focal point to the path between the interdisciplinary team and the patient. This role differs from traditional hospital-based nursing in that the RN is responsible for a panel of patients in varying stages of oncology care, rather than a set shift nurse-to-patient ratio. As such, most Oncology Nurse duties are NOT direct patient care. Daily routines include:
- Patient communication, education and triage, mostly telephonic or electronic
- Coordination of and preparation for patient-physician visits, to include inpatient treatments
- Addressing medication needs, interpreting lab values and pathology
- Knowing surgical plan of care, treatment regimens, nursing indications and understanding adverse reactions
- Building a relationship with the physician and other key players of the oncology team such as pharmacy, laboratory, pathology, finance, schedulers, medical assistants, referral and supportive care teams
Preferred qualifications: Previous oncology experience in Ambulatory or Inpatient setting, self-starting, strong time management, communication, and organizational skills.
