Position Overview
This Assistant Director contributes to our vibrant campus environment through the development and implementation of campus programming geared towards student engagement and involvement outcomes. This position will specifically focus on energizing campus-wide student participation through a variety of programs including late night, weekend, large-scale, and city-wide events. The Assistant Director of Student Activities will collaborate with campus and community partners to enhance the holistic development of the Butler University student body. As a full-time, live-on campus role, this position will also assist with programming efforts and functions in Residence Life.
Responsibilities
- Review, create and implement programming with an emphasis on risk management for late night, weekend, large-scale and city-wide programs that emphasize connection and engagement as well as provide a sense of belonging amongst campus and peers to contribute to the University's “Butler Beyond” strategy and the Division of Student Affairs’ strategic plan.
- Develop office programs and services for students that advance an intentionally inclusive campus community and contribute to BUBeWell.
- Advise the University Program Council (UPC) in the planning and execution of campus-wide programs by providing mentorship, leadership development, guiding risk management and liability considerations, proposing creative and inclusive programming alternatives, coordinating logistics and vendor services, reviewing contracts, facilitating reflection and assessment, and connecting students with campus and community resources.
- Advise large-scale programming groups, including Butler Ambassadors for Special Olympics (BASO), by supporting the planning and execution of their philanthropic events, coordinating with external agencies, managing logistical arrangements, and overseeing fundraising processes.
- Utilize programming and contract skills, and vendor knowledge to collaborate with colleagues to support programs and initiatives that engage students in meaningful ways; share programming expertise with other students, colleagues and campus partners; be present for organizational events and programs; and support trips, retreats and other departmental sponsored initiatives.
- Maintain website, social media and other internal/external communication resources, in collaboration with Office of Student Activities colleagues.
- Supervise student leaders, helping them navigate university systems and reach sound conclusions.
- Contribute to a highly engaged residential experience by living on campus to support residential programming. This includes facilitating 3-5 large residential programs each semester and advising Residence Life staff on best practices for programming.
- Will serve as an alternative on the Residence Life on-call rotation schedule and fully assist with student pre-arrival and departure functions. Live-on responsibilities are subject to annual review and are responsive to campus needs.
- Contribute to the University's strategic goal of creating an intentionally diverse, inclusive, and equitable learning and working environment.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- A master’s degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, or related field
- Strong organization sills and the ability to effectively manage multiple programs and projects
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
- Experience advising college students
- Understanding of college student development theory
- Experience planning and comprehensive understanding of best practices as it related to programming including risk mitigation, contract processes and event planning processes
- Command of technology including student organizational management software (Engage), space reservation systems (EMS), social media and other online tools
