Job Summary

The Critical Care Physician Assistant (CCPA) is a key member of the Emergency Department Team at Duke Regional.  The CCPA is used to their full potential working collaboratively within the Emergency Department to provide direct patient care services, which includes:  performing physical exams, collecting and documenting data, conducting diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, ordering laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribing appropriate interventions, medications and coordinating the care of patients.  The CCPA also provides direct clinical services for critically ill patients with multi-organ trauma or multi-system disease /failure, according to established protocols and utilizes evidence-based clinical practice standards under the supervision of the ED supervising physician.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide direct clinical patient care services for acutely ill and injured patients according to established protocols.
• Perform approved diagnostic and therapeutic procedures based upon patient's clinical status.
• Formulate and implement treatment plan for acute illness management in collaboration with the designated supervising physician and/or attending physician.
• Obtain patient health histories and complete physical examinations.
• Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests/procedures.
• Provide medical assessment, diagnostic determination and clinical management necessary to ensure appropriate clinical disposition of Emergency Department patients.  
• Perform procedures specific to the work environment after demonstrated competency and within the guidelines of scope of practice and credentialing protocols.
• Initiate necessary emergency interventions in an effort to stabilize patients.
• Document in the patients’ medical record all relevant data including but not limited to results of diagnostic tests; laboratory results; patients’ condition and response to therapies/interventions.
• Utilize prescriptive privileges for prescribing, ordering and or administering drugs within prescribing authority.
• Provide family-centered care by direct contact and consultation with patient, patient’s family members, friends, advocates and others to ensure effective communication of patient status and care plans.
• Accurate and timely completion of all clinical and professional records and documentation to assure compliance with local, state and federal regulatory, licensure and accreditation requirements.
• Work to create a positive work culture within the department and cross-departmenta
