About the team
ByteDance System Technology & Engineering(STE) team has been committed to the research and engineering development in the basic technology fields, such as operating system kernel and virtualization, construction and performance optimization of basic system software and library, stability and reliability assurance of large-scale data center, collaborative design of next-generation general-purpose&heterogeneous hardware and software, etc. Armed with comprehensive and solid software engineering capabilities, the team aims to guarantee day-to-day business operations of ByteDance Inc. Meanwhile, the team actively follows the new technology trend, and embraces open source communities and industry standards.

About the Role:
We are seeking a Data Center System Software Engineering Manager for our System Technology and Engineering Global Team based in San Jose, CA. In this role, you will drive the end-to-end delivery of systemic software for our data center infrastructure and collaborate with various teams to support ByteDance's innovative products that bring joy to users around the globe.

Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the bridge between teams across countries, collaborating closely with the data center infrastructure team, computing resource management team, SRE team, and business teams in different areas. You'll focus on stability engineering, performance optimization, and the co-design of system-level hardware and software, delivering impactful results in data center system software to support ByteDance's business development.
- Initiate and manage complex, cross-functional programs, leading all aspects of program delivery.
- Create and maintain the team’s roadmap.
- Define strategies for driving programs and continuously seek improvements using data-driven methods.

Project Management:
- Create and maintain project schedules and define key milestones
- Track progress, identify and mitigate risks, and remove obstacles
- Lead Agile/Scrum teams as a coach or Scrum Master
- Foster a culture that embodies ByteDance's principles and values

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- 5 years of experience in system software development (OS, Kernel, Storage, Networking, or Compiler).
- Strong project ownership and leadership experience, with a proven track record of leading teams of over 10 members.
- In-depth knowledge of at least two of the following areas: server architecture, CPU/GPU architecture, server firmware, OS, Linux kernel, data center networking, data center storage, or compiler technologies.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, demonstrating self-motivation, autonomy, and strong decision-making capabilities.
- A passion for the internet industry and a commitment to addressing global-scale challenges.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Contributions to open-source projects or research publications in relevant areas
- Experience with large-scale data center environments or hyperscale technology companies
- Track record of significantly improving system performance in large-scale environments
- Knowledge of emerging technologies such as AI/ML infrastructure, edge computing, or quantum computing
- Experience with performance analysis and optimization tools
- Strong mentorship skills and experience in building high-performing engineering teams
- Active participation in industry conferences or technical communities
