Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

The Lab Histology/Cytology Assistant position is an entry level position that performs routine functions to aid in the preparation of histopathology and/or cytology samples. The assistant works under general supervision of trained Histology techs and/or Cytology techs.            

Essential Job Functions

Performs multiple computer functions using the laboratory information system.

Performs secretarial and clerical duties (e.g., answering phones, assisting clients and patients, etc.)

Assists pathology, histology, and/or cytology staff.

Performs special procedures.

Prepares specimens, slides, blocks, reports, patient information, and other pertinent materials for mailing to referral sites or pickup by patients, family members, or physicians' office personnel.

May perform specimen collection.

Patient Population

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.  

Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age, specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.
