The Oregon Department of Corrections is actively recruiting to fill a Physical Plant Manager. This position is located at our Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem, Oregon.

About the Job – Your Role

The Physical Plant Manager is responsible for coordinating, instructing, and directing unskilled and semi-skilled Adults in Custody (AICs) in the maintenance and repair of the physical plant and equipment necessary for the operation of a correctional institution. This position supervises a diverse team, including 22 employees and 20–50 AICs engaged in maintenance, repairs, minor construction, and the operation of buildings, utilities, vehicles, equipment, security systems, and grounds. The manager establishes, implements, and documents preventive maintenance schedules to ensure proper upkeep and extended service life of facility components, while also executing routine maintenance to minimize equipment failures. Responsibilities include preparing for and responding to emergencies, prioritizing work to ensure critical systems such as electrical, mechanical, security, and plumbing are maintained, and making frequent inspections to evaluate the quality of work performed by staff, AICs, and contractors. The role also includes full supervisory duties such as assessing training needs, managing performance evaluations, salary adjustments, discipline, and promotional actions, as well as coordinating with the Facilities Division on maintenance issues and capital improvement projects. In addition, the manager maintains custody and control of AICs assigned to the Physical Plant in accordance with institutional policies and evaluates their training needs based on assigned work crews.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Six (6) years of lead work, foreman work, or supervision related to the class concept; OR
  • Four (4) years of experience related to the class concept AND completion of an accredited vocational-training or construction-training program related to the class concept; OR
  • Three (3) years of related experience and a bachelor’s degree in a related field; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
