POSITION PURPOSE: Under the direction of the Director of Budgeting, Accounting, and Reporting for Academic Affairs, the Accountant III is responsible for managing day-to-day financial and managerial accounting and reporting activities, including those related to stateside, enterprise, and auxiliary funding. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of GAAP, FASB, and GASB standards to perform advanced accounting tasks independently. Key responsibilities include managing inter-fund accounting, account reconciliations, journal entries, and resolving complex accounting issues. The Accountant III also conducts financial analysis, budget development, variance analysis, and prepares financial statements and reports. Additionally, this position involves interpreting federal and state regulations, recommending changes, and assisting in documenting business processes. The Accountant III provides training and assistance to other employees, ensures accuracy and integrity in reporting, supports management decision-making with analysis and forecasting, and prepares compliance reports for various governmental and institutional requirements.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
General Accounting Duties:
- Perform, review, and analyze a broad range of complex accounting, budgeting, and financial activities using
- substantial judgement and discretion, to ensure compliance with various policies, timely recordkeeping, proper
- accounting treatment and accurate reporting.
- Analyze transactions and reports for correct coding, appropriateness, and completeness.
- Recommend and prepare adjustments, journal entries, reports, and transfers of revenues and expenditures.
- Completes schedules for various business units, funds and accounts for monthly reporting and the annual audit.
- Prepare fluctuation analysis (actuals vs prior year, actuals vs budget, actual vs projections).
- Frequently provide timely and accurate information in response to customer inquiries and reporting that evidences a
- strong understanding of GAAP, compliance, and policy.
- Maintain, reconcile and update monthly schedules for invoicing, drawdowns and financial reporting.
- Develop, maintain, complete, and review detailed schedules.
- Develop, maintain and complete accurate financial records.
- Using best-in-class customer service, provide technical advice and consultation to campus constituents by answering
- questions, providing information, making referrals, and assuring appropriate follow-through and/or resolution.
- Assist with various audits and tax preparation including scheduling, preparing, and reviewing audit schedules.
- Be a key contributor in resolving complex challenges and refine processes to improve efficiency
Reporting Duties:
- Assist in the coordination, development and/or production of various reports to meet customer expectations including
- the CSU Chancellor’s Office, Auxiliary Organization Board of Directors, CSUB management, internal and external
- auditors, and/or other internal and external constituents.
- Adhere to legal, regulatory, and/or policy requirements, ensuring timely and accurate reporting.
- Maintain all databases and software related to reporting needs.
- Prepare financial statements, supporting schedules, and footnotes in support of the annual audit.
