About the role

Overview

Hardware meets embedded software on this award-winning FPGA team!

As the Associate Staff Engineer, FPGA/SoC and Embedded Linux Development, you will be involved in leading critical aspects of product design from conceptualization through system design. This includes hardware and embedded software component design, component testing, system testing, and successful product launches. As a cross-functional opportunity, you will bridge the gap between hardware and software by working with both Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) and System-on-Chips (SoCs) alongside Embedded Linux systems across Shure products.

We will consider various seniority levels for this position.

This role is hybrid based out of our Niles, IL corporate headquarters.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and participate in the full-cycle FPGA/SoC design, author production-level HDL code modules and testbenches, design core signal processing and control elements, interface other hardware devices, and integrate custom and vendor FPGA IP cores.
  • Learn internal embedded development processes, author production-level Linux kernel/driver code to verify FPGA RTL modules, lead integration and system-level testing until the entire system is operational.
  • Test and analyze circuits by overseeing verification specifications, monitoring system performance, characterizing bugs, and troubleshooting issues.

  • Research, develop, and demonstrate new technologies like AI and ML as they apply to AV products, stay up-to-date with the latest technologies, and communicate findings to the appropriate levels.
  • Lead collaborative efforts with applications, marketing, and manufacturing departments to determine design expectations and capabilities; work with Embedded and DSP designers to meet system design requirements.
  • Write specifications, test requirement documents, and contribute to building team expertise.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field; graduate coursework is desirable.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience.
  • Extensive experience in designing FPGA logic, understanding digital device characteristics, and using design and simulation tools based on HDL (Hardware Description Language).
  • Superior hands-on laboratory skills for testing and verifying FPGA designs, familiarity with a wide range of test equipment.
  • Proficiency in integrating technologies for proof-of-concept demonstrations.
  • Board-level integration/test knowledge, ability to understand, read, and review schematic drawings.
  • Solid understanding of FPGA/SoC architecture.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C, C++, and Python.
  • Solid understanding of Linux kernel internals, drivers, and networking protocols.
  • Expertise with FPGA development tools such as Modelsim, Riviera Pro, Vivado, Quartus.
  • Familiarity with build systems (such as Yocto Project) and development tools (GDB, JTAG, etc.).
  • Experience with embedded software development environments and tools for real-time embedded Linux on ARM processors.
  • Experience in hardware driver development and Linux kernel/module development.
  • Ability to work independently and lead within a team environment.
  • Self-motivated to learn new technologies and flexible to support various tasks.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), including the ability to interact with all levels of staff and management.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle complex assignments requiring in-depth evaluation of variable factors.
  • Judicious selection of methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to achieve results.
  • Capability to provide guidance to other personnel on new assignments.
  • Desire and energy to explore new technologies and demonstrate their relevance to our products.
