The Role
Moderna is seeking a Control Systems / Automation & AI Co-Op to support a high-priority digital automation initiative focused on Building Automation Systems (BAS) and AI-assisted alarm analysis for critical manufacturing facilities.
This role will support the global deployment of an AI-enabled system that assists engineering teams in diagnosing and responding to critical HVAC and facilities alarms. The Co-Op will work closely with experienced BAS, Controls, and Automation engineers to help structure engineering knowledge and operational context so it can be effectively used by AI tools.
Here’s What You’ll Do
The Co-Op will support activities including:
Reviewing and understanding HVAC mechanical and control documentation (e.g., P&IDs, control logic, alarm definitions)
Assisting with the construction and organization of a for AI consumption
Supporting Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) workflows, including testing and refinement
Working with BAS and controls concepts such as:
HVAC control strategies for critical environments Facilities and Controls Knowledge Base
Sensors, actuators, and control loops
BACnet communication
Time-series data (e.g., OSI PI)
Assisting with testing AI responses using Moderna’s corporate ChatGPT platform
Supporting documentation and procedure development
This role is decision-support focused and does not involve operating or modifying regulated production systems.
Here’s What You’ll Need (Basic Qualifications)
Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or higher degree in:
Mechanical Engineering
Electrical Engineering
Control Systems / Automation
Robotics or Mechatronics
Or a related Engineering program
Interest in automation, control systems, and applied AI
Ability to read and interpret technical engineering documentation
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Comfortable learning new tools and technical domains
Interest in system-level thinking across mechanical, controls, and data domains
This position is site-based, requiring you to be at Moderna’s site full-time. This position is not eligible for remote work.

Here's What You'll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications)
Coursework or experience in:
Control systems or automation
HVAC systems or building systems
Data analysis, scripting, or software tools (Python, JSON/YAML, Node-RED, etc.)
Exposure to PLCs, DDCs, or BAS concepts
Interest in AI-enabled engineering tools or data-driven systems
Reporting Structure
The Co-Op will report directly to a Principal Engineer in Digital Automation within Facilities & Engineering, and work closely with BAS and Controls SMEs.
