Sentara Norfolk General’s Heart Hospital located in Norfolk, Virginia is hiring experienced Registered Nurses to be a part of our Critical Care Internship and work in the Cardiac Surgical ICU! 

Full Time Night Shift.

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is one of just five Level 1 trauma centers in Virginia, home to the Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance and the region’s first Magnet® hospital and nationally ranked heart program at the Sentara Heart Hospital. Sentara Norfolk General and the Heart Hospital offers Transplant Services: Heart, Kidney, and Pancreas.  We are a Certified Stroke Center and the only Level 3 Epilepsy Center in the area.

The Critical Care Internship is a 13-week paid internship that consists of didactic cardiac classroom lectures with modules, ICU documentation and initiatives, Code Blue review, Pulmonary/Vent lectures, Organ Management lectures, GI & Nutrition, Renal and hematology lectures, Self-Care, and Simulation Lab training.

Cardiac Surgical ICU Unit Description:

  • 20 Bed cardiac surgical ICU.
  • Nurses handle 1-2 patients on this unit based on acuity level.
  • Nurses provide service to any patients that have undergone open heart surgeries such as CABG, Valve repair or replacement, aneurysm repair, TAVR, ablations, Heart Transplantation, and Mechanical Circulatory Support devices including the Total Artificial Heart and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), and various lung surgeries.
  • Nurses manage critically ill patients that require intensive hemodynamic monitoring, mechanical ventilation, multiple drug infusions, IABP therapy and CRRT.

Start date is September 23rd, 2024.

This position's primary duties include assessing/admitting patients, rounding checks, giving medications, talking with family members, and being responsible for the overall care of your patients. Education/Licensure/Experience: 

  • Diploma RN, associate degree RN, bachelor’s degree RN, or master’s degree RN.  
  • All Direct Care RNs are required to have BLS within 90 days of hire. 
  • RN License Virginia or Compact/Multi-State Eligible.
  • 1+ year of IMCU – Stepdown or 2 years of Med/Surg, and cardiac experience required.
