Your Specific Responsibilities:
The employee is responsible for initiating, coordinating, and providing tobacco prevention and education activities throughout Miami-Dade County under the supervision of the Health Education Program Manager (HEPM). The Senior Health Educator (SHE) will assist the HEPM with the development and submission of the tobacco prevention work plan focusing on preventing the initiation of tobacco use among youth and young adults, promoting cessation, and reducing exposure to secondhand smoke. The SHE will serve as the coordinator for the youth prevention component, Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) and will be responsible with maintaining the Miami Dade SWAT Chapter through support of SWAT Chapter initiatives, clubs, activities, and promotion of youth empowerment. The SHE will work to recruit and support SWAT Advisors, clubs, and youth to maintain the establishment and operation of SWAT clubs in schools and community/faith-based settings in Miami Dade County. Ensure compliance of SWAT advisors to agreements, quarterly deliverables are received and processed for payment in a timely manner. Maintain membership roster, records, and deliverables, conduct monthly check-ins with advisors and conduct quarterly site visits to established clubs in the Chapter. trainings for SWAT advisors and youth, coordinating Chapter meetings/trainings/events, ensuring youth in the SWAT organization are trained and empowered with knowledge of tobacco issues and prevention and advocacy skills. Work with SWAT youth, advisors, local schools, community/faith-based organizations to develop youth specific trainings and events as well as plan and implement anti-tobacco and advocacy activities. The SHE will also be responsible for assisting with developing SWAT leaders within the Chapter through leadership skills training and related activities. Participate or help coordinate local, regional and statewide SWAT calls.
Responsible for educating and working with the school district, community stakeholders and youth on the K-12 initiative. Provides data and consults with stakeholders and decision makers on tobacco related issues in the school system. Provides assistance to interested parties in developing new or revising existing tobacco related policies and assists with the creation and implementation of policy change. Conducts assessments of policy components achieved and creates materials to spread awareness on the benefits of a comprehensive tobacco free school policy. Participates in meetings, trainings, and health promotion events as required for the initiative.
Responsible for assisting the Health Education Program Manager in preparing and facilitating meetings of the Consortium for a Healthier Miami Dade, ensuring that Consortium programs are aligned with tobacco initiatives. Provide information and update Consortium for a Healthier Miami-Dade and Florida Department of Health in Miami Dade websites on tobacco issues. Support/facilitate meetings with the Youth and Young Adult subcommittee. Participate in the activities of the Consortium for a Healthier Miami-Dade by attending and assisting at events, meetings and disseminating information to various committees and community partners.
Collect and analyze data to ensure program outcomes. Enter quarterly progress reports into the Automated Tobacco Activity Collection System (ATACS). Submit regular reports as required to ensure appropriate progress on work plan, agency objectives and as required to ensure compliance with State Guidelines. Provide written justification for procurement of services/products to promote initiatives for tobacco prevention and education. Serve as chaperone for SWAT youth to required SWAT events, meetings, and trainings. This position requires transportation of youth and/or adult volunteers to tobacco related functions.
Promote the Florida Quitline and refer community members to tobacco cessation services offered at local level. Promote empowerment of community partners by increasing skills, knowledge of tobacco issues and prevention.
