The Colorado Geological Survey is hiring for a Geologist III - Minerals Specialist and Mapping GeologistThe Colorado Geological Survey is seeking a qualified candidate to perform geologic field mapping, collect geologic field data, prepare geologic maps, examine deposits for their mineral resource and geologic hazard potential, and contribute to and publish geologic maps and reports. Travel to conduct field work at remote sites will be required.
The successful candidate will also play a key role in assisting with and managing tasks associated with mineral resource projects. The candidate will be responsible for conducting geologic field investigations, creating maps, evaluating geological data, writing reports, and publishing maps and reports with a focus on mineral resources. They will also lead and/or collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, constituents, and stakeholders on grant proposals, reports, and data releases.
The candidate will conduct public outreach that promotes the CGS mission through presentations, demonstrations, posters, and other media.
Responsibilities:
Geologic field mapping and map production (50%)
- Under the direction of Geologic Mapping Program Supervisor, performs geologic field mapping in a variety of geologic terranes and compiles geologic field information for publication in GIS and written reports. Analyzes geologic, geologic hazard, mineral and water resources data and publishes maps and reports for the public, and federal, state, and local governments. Most of this responsibility will require travel associated with fieldwork activities.
- Contact property landowners for permission to access private lands for mapping purposes. This duty may require answering technical and consumer-related inquiries from government agencies, private-industry, and the general public, involving matters of geologic expertise.
Mineral resources (40%)
- Under supervision of the Minerals and Energy Resources Supervisor, provide input into the direction of mineral resource projects in Colorado.
- Complete mineral resource studies including gathering and compiling data, interpreting geochemical data, conducting field studies, writing reports, creating maps in ArcGIS Pro, publishing maps and datasets, and attending meetings and conferences.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and develop proposals seeking external funding for mineral resource projects.
- Promote the mineral resources of Colorado through presentations at conferences and meetings.
Outreach and administrative support (10%)
- Communicate with CGS Outreach Group and determine the best use of CGS resources for public outreach events and materials if required. Obtain approval from Director or supervisor.
- Office duties and administrative tasks as assigned. This may include attending meetings, conferences, and other functions essential to the programs and CGS/Mines.
Physical Requirements:
- Will be required to drive several miles to field sites.
- Will be required to hike several miles in mountainous terrain in a variety of weather conditions.
- Will be required to use rock hammers, shovels, and other hand-operated field equipment.
- May be required to carry heavy backpacks, samples, equipment, and other items.
Minimal Level of Education and Experience:
- A master’s degree in Geology or Earth Science is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities and Other Attributes (KSAOs):
- Prior experience performing mineral resource and geological mapping projects in Colorado.
- Prior experience in the mineral resources field or industry.
Desired Level of Education and Experience:
- A PhD in Geology or Earth Science and at least 5 years of experience performing a combination of mineral resource and geologic field mapping projects.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities and Other Attributes (KSAOs):
- Advanced working knowledge of ArcPro GIS software, Microsoft Office, Leapfrog, or similar data visualization tools.
- Prior experience with GeMS metadata standards.
- Prior experience evaluating and synthesizing geological and geochemical data.
- Prior experience writing technical reports, grant proposals, and obtaining external funding.
- Prior experience participating in and leading multidisciplinary team meetings.
