Position Overview:
Develop, execute, and evaluate internal and external marketing and communications efforts on behalf of the Boston Public Library. Raise the profile and enhance the reputation of the Boston Public Library system and staff, its collections and services to the people of Boston and the Commonwealth, and its award-winning strategic plan, the BPL Compass.

Responsibilities
- Lead creation, conception, and presentation of social media content for daily presence and integrated marketing campaigns. Establish and oversee social media contests and other user and staff engagement projects.
- Create engaging print and electronic promotional and informational materials that demonstrate consistent use of Boston Public Library’s image and brand guidelines in copy, design, and overall feel.
- Develop and execute marketing and promotional campaigns that highlight Boston Public Library as a whole, along with its services, staff, programs, collections, major projects, and strategic plan. Create content for and leverage tools such as email, direct mail, flyers, web content, social media content, in-person scripting, brochures, flyers, presentations, speeches, blog posts, website highlights, newsletters, dynamic displays of information, and more.
- Provide technical assistance and coaching to library personnel and affiliates on the development of print and electronic materials. Review, edit, and approve promotional materials.
- Act as style and editorial guidelines monitor to ensure proper style/format is being used across the institution. Monitor communications materials for uniformity in message, format, tone, and content.
- Read trade publications and industry blogs and consult with other professionals in order to keep abreast of marketing standards and trends. Stay informed of evolving best practices for user engagement, email marketing, search engine optimization, promotions, social media, and other relevant topics.
- Collaborate with external partners and vendors as needed to discuss Boston Public Library requirements and presentation concepts and to coordinate creative execution and production. Effectively track and manage external projects.
- Communicate, orally and in writing, accurate information on all aspects of the Boston Public Library’s services, programs, accomplishments, history, strategies, and more.
- Participate in the collection, review, analysis, and reporting of data and performance metrics for marketing and communications initiatives and Boston Public Library programs/services.
- Maintain contacts and up-to-date knowledge of activities and programs in all Boston Public Library locations. Regularly visit Boston Public Library locations across the system.
- Update library online presence and intranet content; collaborate with other departments to keep web copy accurate and fresh. Ensure key library facts and figures are consistent, accurate, and appropriately highlighted in print and online.
- Arrange meetings, prepare meeting materials, and take minutes as appropriate. Convene brainstorming sessions, progress check-ins, and other regular meetings of the communications office.
- Monitor professional awards and article-writing opportunities in the library industry and other related fields. Maintain schedule of award due dates and criteria.
- Maintain the Boston Public Library photo/media and collateral archive.
- Perform other related and comparable duties as assigned.
Minimum Entrance Qualifications
- Education - Bachelor's degree in Business, Communications, or Marketing from a recognized college or university. Graduate degree in a related field is preferred.
- Experience - Four (4) or more years of directly related experience in marketing or communications.
- Experience with libraries, government, and/ or nonprofits is desirable.
- Advanced user of productivity software and creative suites such as Microsoft Office and Adobe InDesign.
- Demonstrated use of social media on behalf of a brand or organization.
- Demonstrated experience with photography, videography, photo editing, and video editing.
- Strong portfolio illustrating examples of work.
- Self-motivated and proactive with exceptional follow-up on assignments.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, transparency, and integrity.
- Superior writing skills, editing skills, and attention to detail.
- Strong storytelling ability through pictures, numbers, and words.
- Strong relationship-building skills, ability to work
