Job Summary

Performs duties to promote patient comfort and provides assistance to the nursing staff as a part of the patient care team. Transports patients by wheelchair, bed or stretcher to and from the department and nursing units under the direct supervision of an RN. Functions as a certified Nurse Assistant to promote patient comfort for all classification of patients including adolescents; young adults; middle adults; and the elderly. Assists nursing staff as directed. Conducts EKG and phlebotomy responsibilities when directed.

The 3 South/3 North Intermediate Cardiac Care Unit offers a higher level of medical services than routine inpatient support, yet not to the degree or intensity of critical care. As a Patient Care Nursing Assistant (PCNA) on this team, you will work collaboratively with fellow caregivers to create a welcoming, healing, and compassionate environment for patients. This position offers a flexible schedule, opportunities for educational advancement, and access to skills development courses through Cleveland Clinic. It’s an excellent opportunity to begin your nursing career in a supportive and caring healthcare setting.

A caregiver in this role works days from 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

• Assist nursing caregivers, promote patient comfort, carry out nursing orders 

• Transport patients by wheelchair, bed or stretcher from the department/unit. 

• Conduct EKG and phlebotomy duties.  

• Attend to patient and family needs and problems.  

• Assist patients with daily living activities, such as dressing, bathing and hygiene. 

• Report pertinent information regarding patient condition to appropriate nursing staff. 

• Assist patients with tray set up and feeding.  

• Restock supplies daily and order supplies from Central Supply.  

• Document care provided in the medical record.  

• Collect and transport specimens.  

• Provide RNs/LPNs with accurate and timely intake/output data, vital signs, blood glucose results and other data, note changes from prior measurement and communicate accordingly.  

• Respond to call lights within five minutes or communicate inability to do so.  

• Report patient needs to an RN/LPN immediately.  

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

• High School Diploma or GED 

• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within new hire period 

• Nursing students: Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross upon hire 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

• Graduate of an approved program for Nursing Assistants or previous hospital training 

• Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Certification  

• Six months of experience in an acute care hospital setting
