New registered nurse (RN) graduates' benefit from a comprehensive, personalized support system. All RNs in their first nursing role are invited to participate in a Nurse Residency Program alongside nursing orientation. The program provides socialization and support, enhances clinical judgment, and promotes professional development.

The pre-Admission Testing (PAT) unit works collaboratively with hospitalists and anesthesiologists to optimize patients for surgical and endoscopic procedures. PAT has 2 methods of working with patients. One method is a “Clinic” setting in which patients have in-person visits to assess their current health status to determine additional preprocedural testing and/or care to optimize their health prior to procedure. The second method is a “Call Center” setting in patients, are contacted for a phone interview for a nursing assessment and to provide instructions for day of procedure.

Nursing skills gained on this unit:

• Nursing assessment   and identification of risk factors for procedures
• Pre-anesthesia teaching to patient and family    
• Teamwork, collaboration, and effective communication

Qualifications

• Requires Associates of Nursing (ASN); Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) preferred.
• Requires current state of Indiana license as Registered Nurse.
• Requires that the RN has graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program.
• Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA.
• Other advanced Life Support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
