Under administrative and direct supervision of the Regional Director of Speech Pathology service. Performs and interprets swallowing, motor speech, language, cognitive, and voice diagnostic testing primarily to outpatients in accordance with established protocols and evidenced based practice. Counsels patients and families/caregivers as to test results. Interacts with referring physicians and prepares diagnostic reports. Provides dysphagia, motor speech, language, cognitive and voice therapies to relevant patients. Completes all appropriate medical documentation in a timely fashion. Participates in training or in-service education programs. Manages outpatient systems to provide efficient access to care. Provides coverage to in-patient units as needed. 

1. Performs diagnostic speech, language, voice and dysphagia evaluations (including FEES, Videofluoroscopy) in order to diagnose impairments such as dysphagia, language disorders, motor/speech impairments, cognitive impairments, voice disorders, dysfluency, etc. for patients in the ambulatory care clinic. Prepares written evaluations and completes medical documentation in a timely manner. Provides patient and family counseling; advises physicians and clinical staff of results; discusses speech and language therapies. Contacts external agencies regarding test results/case management.

2. Provides speech, language, voice and dysphagia †treatment for patients who would potentially benefit. Prepares written treatment plans, reports, progress notes, discharge summaries and other medical documentation at appropriate intervals and in a timely manner. Provides patient/family counseling; advises physicians and clinical staff of progress; maintains contacts with external agencies.

3. Participates in medical and professional conferences to discuss test results, case analysis and follow-up to treatments. Participates in institutional or external in-service programs for purposes of continuing clinical education. Provides teaching or training, as required, of clinicians, medical residents, students and externs. Participates in quality assurance programs for service.

4. Performs other duties pursuant to clinical responsibility, such as arranging follow-up for patients. Monitors, records, and schedules outpatient referrals to maintain efficient access to patient care and track departmental statistics. Performs related duties as required professionally, or required by Regional Director of Speech Pathology, physicians, Director of Otolaryngology.

1. Job requires completion of NYS-approved program for training of speech language pathologists to acquire knowledge of assessment and treatment of dysphagia and communication disorders involving language, fluency, voice and articulation; use of equipment; and counseling, ordinarily acquired via Master’s Degree. Completion of CFY and at least one year of experience with the target populations is required.

2. New York State licensure as a Speech Language Pathologist is mandatory. 

3. Very high level of analytical ability required to effectively and expeditiously diagnose and treat communication disorders including cognitive communicative, voice, language, feeding and swallowing for culturally diverse patient populations. 

4. Interacts with various internal hospital, medical, administrative and professional staff in the course of routine clinical duties. High degree of responsibility required for daily contacts with patients and their families. The ability to implement and maintain organizational systems involved in the administrative aspect of the job is required. Effective time management for punctual documentation is required.

5. Some manual dexterity required for manipulation of testing or treatment materials and equipment.

6. Spanish and/or other foreign language speaking skills are a plus.
