Summary
THE POSITION: The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program is seeking compassionate, community-focused, and trilingual individuals to join our team as a WIC Nutrition Assistant I/II. Under the guidance of a nutritionist, incumbents provide culturally responsive nutrition education, breastfeeding support, eligibility screening, and outreach services to individuals and families enrolled in the WIC Program. This position plays an important role in promoting healthy lifestyles and connecting participants to valuable health and community resources while delivering client-centered services in a diverse, multilingual environment. Successful candidates must be able to effectively communicate with participants in English, Spanish, and Mixteco to support the unique needs of the communities served.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE: The ideal candidate can easily establish rapport with people from various backgrounds and is an empathetic and effective communicator. The ideal candidate will also have a passion for helping others, and will be willing and able to interact with families with infants and/or small children on a regular basis.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
The WIC Nutrition Assistant I is the entry level of the series and is expected to work toward State of California WIC Nutrition Assistant Certification.
The WIC Nutrition Assistant II is the journey level of the series and requires possession of a State of California WIC Nutrition Assistant Certificate.
APPROXIMATE SALARIES
WIC Nutrition Assistant I - $23.00 - $27.66 hourly
WIC Nutrition Assistant II - $24.19 - $34.05 hourly
EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE: Some positions may be eligible for educational incentive. This incentive may be 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% for incumbents in eligible positions based on completion of an Associate’s, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree that is not required for the classification.

WIC Nutrition Assistant I/II are represented by the Service Employees' International Union (SEIU) and are eligible for overtime compensation.
The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies. There is currently one (1) Regular vacancy.
NOTE: If appointed at the lower level, incumbent may be promoted to the higher level without further examination upon meeting the minimum requirements, demonstrating satisfactory performance, and in accordance with the business needs of the department.

Examples of duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assists with provision of (I) or provides (II) client centered, culturally competent, individual assessments, and education on health, nutrition, and breastfeeding to low risk clients, using adult learning techniques;
- Answers inquiries, schedules appointments, and screens for WIC eligibility;
- Uses internet-based computer programs to input and access participant information
- Issues WIC foods and benefits to participants;
- Provides group education using adult learning techniques;
- Assists with Spanish and Mixteco interpretation for nutritionists;
- Refers high risk clients to professional staff;
- Makes referrals to medical and social programs and resources;
- Conducts outreach and educational activities to individuals and groups in the community; and
- Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
EDUCATION, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE:
WIC Nutrition Assistant I:
Any combination of education, training, and experience which has led to the acquisition of the required knowledge and abilities. The required knowledge and abilities can also be obtained by a high school diploma or GED and six (6) months experience providing social services to the public.
