The Department of Justice, Law and Criminology in the School of Public Affairs at American University invites applications for an Executive In-Residence term faculty appointment for Academic Year 2025-2026. The appointment will be at the rank of Professorial Lecturer and is a 12-month term position. The position will commence on August 1, 2025, through July 31, 2026.
Applicants should hold a PhD in a relevant field (e.g., criminology, criminal justice, sociology, political science, or public policy). The position will require the incumbent to teach three courses per semester with a primary focus on terrorism and national security. All faculty are expected to hold office hours and participate in School and University activities and service.
The successful candidate will teach courses in Terrorism, Counterterrorism, Cybersecurity or Homeland Security (US or comparative), including (but not limited to) the following courses: Causes of Terrorism and Political Violence; Domestic Terrorism; Terrorism and Counterterrorism in Practice; U.S. Cyber Policy; Applied Practicum courses; and Homeland Security.
The successful candidate will also demonstrate the ability to develop and teach innovative new courses that are relevant in the changing field of homeland security. Applicants with practitioner experience in emerging topics, such as AI, and skills relevant to the program, such as project management, are preferred.
In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will support the graduate student experience, including assisting with the Master of Science in Counterterrorism and Homeland Security program immersion experience, recruitment events, and well as professional development for SPA graduate students.
Salary and benefits are competitive. The salary range for this position is $70,000-$80,000. Salaries above the stated range are subject to budgetary approval and commensurate with exceptional experience.
