Job Overview:
Under the supervision of the RN, the Patient Care Technician (PCT) performs various care activities and related services necessary in caring for the personal needs, comfort and safety of a specific patient population (ANA Standards of Delegation, 2004). The employee must be able to successfully complete job specific orientation, competencies, and meet/exceed standards as identified in the criteria based performance appraisal. PCTs must demonstrate awareness of patients' rights in all aspects of patient care and report issues to the appropriate person. The PCT demonstrates leadership through coordination of unit equipment and activities. Communicates to the RN pertinent findings or observations noted while providing patient care and comfort. Assist professional staff with basic life support principles.

Unit Description:

The OB Emergency Department (OBED) is located at The Women’s Hospital.  It is a 10-bed unit that includes 2 pre-op/PACU rooms for OB surgery and 8 rooms for OBED patients to be evaluated and treated.  The OBED provides care for patients in all aspects of pregnancy from conception to delivery and any gynecological emergencies.  OBED staff are responsible for all OB surgery cases in the hospital, including preoperative and PACU phases of care. Outpatient procedures such as external cephalic version and cervical cerclage placements and removals are also done in the OBED.  Physicians send patients to the OBED for outpatient testing and medical work-ups, which includes, but not limited to: lab work, ultrasound, Blood Pressure monitoring, and Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) for an extended period of time.

Required: Certifications/Licenses/Education:

  • Basic Life Support: Health Care Provider, within six months of hire.
  • Completion of a high school education or equivalent (GED) preferred 
  • Successfully complete PCT classes as required by care center/unit.
