Job Overview
The Controller is responsible for all general accounting activities including payroll, financial reporting, and closing activities. The Controller maintains the integrity of the accounting system and provides training and support to staff. This position also provides clear and effective planning, project management, and supervises accounting staff and manages vendors.
Responsibilities
- Capture Accurate Financial Data to Support Analysis and Meaning Making:
- Maintain accounting system and financial dashboards to ensure an accurate flow of data by collecting, interpreting, and reviewing financial information
- Review and produce financial reports related to budgets, account payables, account receivables, expenses
- Provide financial insight and analysis to drive the business performance of the organization
Skillfully Lead Financial Operations, including:
- Review and approve bi-monthly payroll, manage multi-state employer registrations
- Review and approve drafted contracts and amendments, ensuring total contract values align with the budget
- Lead month-end and year end accounting closing process
- Participate in the execution of changes to procedures, policies, and systems to facilitate expansion, compliance, and increased efficiency
- Supervises, coaches, and mentors accounting staff
- Work closely with multiple internal teams to resolve issues, design and implement process changes, and make enhancements to financial systems
- Contribute strongly to cross-disciplinary teamwork, collaboration, and planning for the organization
As a member of the Borealis staff, the Controller performs certain functions that are not specific to their job but support the organization as a whole. This includes:
- Submitting and approving expense reports and approving timecards by stated deadlines
- Attending all staff meetings and required trainings and events
- Participating in organizational development and change processes, including serving on committees or special project teams
- Model Borealis’ culture and values; align outcomes, practices, and communications within the organization’s culture
- Manage special projects and other duties as assigned
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field, plus 5 years related work experience, or a combination of education and experience
- CPA is beneficial but not required
- Five (5) years relevant nonprofit or philanthropy accounting experience, including enforcing financial policies
- Three (3) years of previous supervisory experience
