Assistant Professor of Latin American Literary and Cultural Studies

The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Notre Dame seeks a tenure-track assistant professor who specializes in Afro Latin America. To complement our existing strengths in the Hispanophone Caribbean, we seek applications from specialists of Black literary and cultural production in one or more of the following regions: Brazil, the Andes, the Southern Cone, Central America, Mexico.  A strong research profile and near-native fluency in Spanish are required.  Specialists of Brazil will teach in Spanish, English and Portuguese as needed.  The historical period and methodological frameworks are open; we welcome applications from scholars whose interdisciplinary approaches to Black Studies in Latin America can contribute to cross-departmental and cross-school programs like the Institute for Latino Studies, Initiative on Race and Resilience, and the Kellogg Institute in the Keough School of Global Affairs. Duties include teaching, research, and service. The standard teaching load is 2-2, including undergraduate and graduate courses. 

 

Qualifications

A strong research profile and near-native fluency in Spanish are required.  Specialists of Brazil will teach in Spanish, English and Portuguese as needed. Candidates at the entry level must have completed all requirements for a Ph.D. degree or have completed all but dissertation in Latin American Literary and Cultural Studies or a closely related field with degree expected before August 1, 2026. Candidates at the assistant professor level must have a Ph.D. in Latin American Literary and Cultural Studies or a closely related field.
