Job Description:

Provides academic guidance to both current and prospective University College students as a means to ensure their success at LSU and to help define their academic goals. Serves as the Pre-Professional Allied Health academic counselor and recruitment coordinator. Develops and serves as the head of the peer-mentoring committee for pre-professional students who serve as support for recruitment and orientation.

Job Responsibilities


60% Provides educational guidance and assistance for students by planning schedules, recommending courses and determining appropriate education solutions for a diverse population of students. Follows through and tracks the advancement of students as they strive to accomplish their academic goals. Additionally, provides case management to students who do not meet their educational requirements and offers guidance toward other academic programs. Utilizes various electronic and print-based materials, as well as multiple university databases to interpret LSU degree programs. Serves as the conduit for students in interpreting and enforcing university policies and procedures that students encounter in University College and other LSU entities. Manages a counselor: student ratio of approximately 1:300 serving prospective students, new students, re-entry students and transfer students who are enrolled in University College. Records advising notes in a variety of formats for reference and for referrals to appropriate campus departments and agencies. Guides students through a variety of academic appeals processes and presents these appeals to the administration on behalf of the students.

30% Coordinates and executes UC academic programs and resources for Allied Health students.  Provides academic and career advising to students pursuing admission into pre-professional programs. Serves on appeals and admissions committees as needed and as pertains to pre-professional programming.  Assesses programs, maintains statistics, and provides semester, annual, and ad hoc reports as needed.  Provide a direct relationship with the LSU Health Sciences Center’s School of Allied Health to maintain accurate and up-to-date information regarding programming offered through the schools. Develop and manage advising, recruitment, and program literature relevant to pre-professional programs.  Serve as the University College (UC) coordinator for recruitment for Pre-Professional programs and acts as a recruiter and orientation leader for current, prospective, and alumni students interested in LSU Allied Health Programs. Represents University College at university-level recruitment programming which includes travel and occasional night and weekend work. Coordinates on-campus visits from pre-professional programs.  Develops and leads the peer-mentoring committee for pre-professional students who serve as support for recruitment and orientation. Provides leadership and professional development opportunities for students on the committee.

10% Assists Director in training new staff on Allied Health programs and processes. Acts as a mentor to designated Academic Counselor 1 staff, to assist new staff in professional success within the unit and provide guidance in the areas of professional standards, University policy and procedures, and available resources. Conducts a variety of academic workshops and public presentations for current and prospective students and parents including, but not limited to, Bengal Bound Orientation. Provides advising support through the Student Success One Stop as assigned. May include occasional nights and weekends. Performs other duties as assigned by leadership.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education Level: Bachelor’s Degree and three years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Education Level: Master’s Degree

Specific Degree: Counseling, Social Work, Higher Education Administration, or related human relations

field

Years of Experience: 5 years

Specific Experience: Demonstrated ability to coordinate and direct academic programs; demonstrated
