Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Overview:

  • The PMHNP has responsibility for providing psychiatric care and treatment for children ranging from 6 to 17 years of age while in a collaborative/consultative relationship with a Mississippi licensed Psychiatrist. 
  • He or she works closely with staff in treatment programs to plan, organize, implement, and provide quality care to individuals served. 
  • Services provided include obtaining an appropriate comprehensive health-history, differentiating between normal and abnormal findings, analyzing and interpreting data to develop appropriate differential diagnoses, and employing appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic interventions and regimens including but not limited to pharmacological, behavioral and other non-pharmacological treatment modalities with attention to safety, invasiveness, simplicity, acceptability, adherence, and efficacy.

Job Responsibilities:

Assure the integrity of clinical services within the treatment programs by:

  • Oversight of the psychiatric care of all clients served;
  • Provide general psychiatric diagnosis and treatment to include assessments, histories and medication management;
  • Prescribe, direct, and administer psychotherapeutic treatments or medications to treat mental, emotional, or behavioral disorders;
  • Examine laboratory or diagnostic tests on individuals served to provide information on general physical condition and mental disorder;
  • Order and oversight of implementation of special procedures;
  • Order medical consults as necessary;
  • Review current program designs and assist in modification as necessary;
  • Assure integrity of client records and personal data;
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining procedures regarding client confidentiality as needed;
  • Assure that each child or adolescent is receiving appropriate care through ongoing monthly case reviews by Interdisciplinary Treatment Teams;
  • Oversight of the Treatment Planning and Discharge planning process for each child or adolescent as needed;
  • Oversight of the Child and Family Treatment team meetings
  • Assist in the Utilization Review Process assuring that each child or adolescent receives maximum benefit from program services;
  • Provide ancillary clinical support services for clients as needed;
  • Meets periodically with clinical staff to assure proper communication;
  • Inform program leadership staff of client, and family/guardian concerns when appropriate; and,
  • Accessibility to staff from assigned programs during regular working hours for crisis management and consultative supervision.

Carries out all administrative duties, which include:

  • Take clinical call, as scheduled;
  • Serve on the CARES leadership team
  • Serve on the Medical Practices Committee and other organizational committees as required; and,
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Master’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited nurse practitioner program;
  • Current license as a Regist
